Going TPI to carb, have question about air filter
Going TPI to carb, have question about air filter
My car was originally a 305 TPI, we have since swapped out the 305 for a 355. We tried to make the TPI setup work but it turns out the time and money to do that is more than swapping it over to carb, which is what I've decided to do. I have a question, though, nothing serious but if someone has done it or has info about how to do it, I'd like to hear it! I would like to leave the original air filter setup on the car, and find some way or some kit that will run tubing or a hood of some sort to the carb so I can continue to use that setup (minus the MAF) instead of putting an air filter on top of the carb. I'm concerned that once I replace the manifold and TPI setup with a carb setup, an air filter may not fit under the stock hood, unless it's tiny. Any ideas? I appreciate it!

Are you sure? Its not just a matter of removing the TPI intake and putting a carb intake on there. There's a lot of parts and pieces that need to be bought, changed, and configured. Isnt there someone close to you that can help you diagnose the TPI before you hack it up for a carb? Good luck!

You could always put a TBI cleaner on it and then run some ducting to the tpi cleaner. You shouldnt have any problems putting an air cleaner on after the carb swap as long as you dont have a spacer of any kind under the carb.
Re: Going TPI to carb, have question about air filter
I don't think I'm going to need a spacer, I just wanted to incorporate the original "ram air" system that used the two filters. I chose a Holley carb and a Weiand intake, haven't yet gotten into the distributor and the fuel pressure regulator, but as for trying to make this primitive fuel injection work, it's not worth the money. The motor ran great with a carb on it previously, so I'm not worried about performance. I don't want to get into flashing the prom and sizing the jets and all the expensive stuff I've been told comes along with the TPI setup on a motor like this in the hopes that it will work out when I know I can revert to a performance carb setup. I was just wondering if there was some sort of mod kit that allowed me to use the stock air filter system.
