I have an edelbrock performer intake with a one inch adapter plate and a carter 9605s carburetor on a 305 non HO z28 motor. With a stock 83 steel hood. I just bought a k & n 1 1/4 drop base and modified it to miss the hei distributor. I have no plugs nor no filter yet.. Just wondering if i am going to have to invest in a new hood or just buy a new square bore intake. Will it fit?

The one inch adapter plate seems a bet thick... 14 x 2 inch air filters are also available, though not common in auto parts stores. Try Ebay. Either one or both of these is much cheaper than a new hood.

We're talking about a stock intake manifold, right? A Performer (or the GMPP spreadbore intake that I have) mount the carb about half an inch higher than the stock manifold. I didn't have any problem clearing the hood with the GMPP intake and a 3"x14" 1-1/4" drop base air cleaner. A stock manifold with a 1" spacer and 2"x14" 1-1/4" drop base air cleaner would have half an inch more clearance than I had.

i have a 4160 holley (square bore) a 2101 spread bore performer intake,
i have an 1/8 inch plate under it to allow linkage clearance on the thermal choke block off on passenger side, a 1/2 air cleaner spacer on top of the carb, not sure why i still have it, i needed it for an edelbrock carb i used for a while to get throttle linkage clearance, not familiar with the carter you speak of
im currently using a 3x14 inch filter in the edelbrock drop base.. under a plain stock un modified firebird hood
i have an stp part# for a 3X14 filter and a purolator part# for on that is approx, 2 5/8 x 14 inch
if you want or need those number holler, they are in my tool box which is not at my side currently

The 2101 has both square bore and spread bore bolt patterns. You don't need an adapter to bolt a square bore carb on it.
So, why the adapter?
So, why the adapter?
Re: Straight Answer
no ****.. i went to get the tv cable bracket and told the auto parts store what i was going to bolt to it and they said that i needed the adapter plate.. but you sure that i don't need it.. cuz that would be a swiff kick in the wallet. that darn adapter wasn't too cheap but i would love to use that money towards a k&n filter

Re: Straight Answer
If you have a squarebore intake, you don't need the plate. If you have a spreadbore intake, you need the adapter, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't have to be nearly that thick.
Re: Straight Answer
alright... so now with me not needing the adapter plate because the 2101 is both square and spread bore. i do have the hei but how far of a drop base will i need before i start hitting the msd hei distributor... or how far of a drop base does everyone else have.

Re: Straight Answer
I have a 5/8" drop, that's the most I can have while leaving enough clearance for the electric choke. Even with that drop, I had to rotate the distributor cap so the filter didn't hit it on the BAT/TACH terminal area.

Not sure about a plate, but brackets are available.

It was implied with what you said, but I wanted to make sure it was clear.
