Carburetor air cleaners, scoops.

So, I've been looking for some suggestions just to change up my engine's look a little. Does anyone have any recommendations for a carburetor air cleaner or scoop? I'm sick of the Edelbrock triangular cleaner. I'm open to any suggestions.

Re: Carburetor air cleaners, scoops.

Stay away from those air cleaners, like the triangle job! They are ONLY good for putting on for a car show, but not for driving! They contain foam for the filter, which many times can easily get sucked into the carb, melt in the intake, and make a helluva mess! Stick with a standard round open air cleaner in whatever size/style makes you happy, and use a simple paper filter or a K&N filter. And skip the open-top jobs as well - unless you have a cowl hood it'll do no good as the hood will just be pressed against it and not allow any additional airflow.

I second staying away from the triangle Edelbrock filters. They are nicknamed "flaming triangles of death" for a reason... they have a tendency to ignite if your carb ever backfires.

Re: Carburetor air cleaners, scoops.

There was a helluva mess when I bought the car, the guy didn't have a single clue what he was doing. That foam filter had a hole in it, so the guy literally put a rag in it and drove it like that. No air was getting in, and it was back firing constantly, my whole hood was black underneath, but thankfully the burnt rag didn't drop into the carb.

Re: Carburetor air cleaners, scoops.

So anyway, to get this back on topic maybe we should hold a little committee, I've been searching and basically narrowed it down to a basic 14 inch circular air cleaner, since a street scoop or "bug catcher" wouldn't fit that era. A simple chrome Holley cleaner, or the Chevy engine dress up kit from JEGS. Feel free to give your input.

Personally, I like the look of Edelbrock's Elite series air cleaners. But that's just me.

I just looked it up, I kind of like it too, but I have to go with something plain, chrome or polished. My engine block's pink, so any other colors would make it look tacky.

I think you're going to have a hard time making anything not look tacky on a pink block. You could probably pull it off with purple, if your girl doesn't mind compromising. Just my

Lol, the pink actually looks super good next to chrome, I'm surprised. It's just any other color throws it off. There's only a hint of pink though, the serpentine system pretty much covers it up, along with the heads and intake manifold, people have to actually look to notice it, some don't.

Do you know if anything like that comes in chrome, or from Holley?

these are the only triangular air cleaners i've ever seen. i have the Edelbrock Elite 4222. the filter is made just for Edelbrock by K&N.

Well thanks for showing me that page, I might be sticking with a triangle job now, they have some pretty decent looking chrome cleaners.

Re: Carburetor air cleaners, scoops.

I've been so stumped on the subject of an air cleaner, I thought what'd look really neat is like, the street scoop from mr gasket, that kind of style that slips over top the carb, designed like a Ram Jet intake.

Re: Carburetor air cleaners, scoops.

I'm never going to make my Iroc some super drag car with monsterous horsepower. I'm building it up to be a strong decent running 300 horsepower sort of sleeper engine, with a 100 shot of giggle gas, for when I wanna have some fun on an empty highway. Right around 400 horsepower is enough for me, and the T5 that's going in it, won't handle much more than that.

What do you think of the oval style? I like it, it's old school like the triangles are.

Re: Carburetor air cleaners, scoops.

-IrocZ-, you should be fine with any open element air cleaner...you don't want to go too crazy. if you're building a sleeper, you don't want to advertise lol. good luck on your build and post pics!

matj1990- there's no issues with rain...just make sure you have the rear cowl seal on the hood. the only issues you'd have with rain would be if you had a hood scoop or cut the hood so the air cleaner would stick out. i've been running an open element air cleaner since summer 08 and in all kinds of weather with no issues.

Primetime91- i only like the oval air cleaners when the engine has 2 or more carbs. that's basically what they were made for. i'd go with either a round or triangular one.

Not that I lift my hood for anyone that's up for a potential race. Lol.. I'm more of a three honks then jam on the gas person, guessing what they have is always fun. Plus, I kept my 3.42's to have some decent top end.

yes that's fine. just go to the parts store and get a vacuum cap..i can't remember what size, but its fairly small. that way you won't lose any vacuum and the open port won't suck in any dirty air.

Re: Carburetor air cleaners, scoops.

You can just barely see the pink, the intake manifold, headers, heads, valve covers, serptentine system, and ignition cover it from almost every angle. I'll gladly get a picture of it when I have some spare cash for a new camera though. My priorities are set on some Wiseco 23 degree hollow dome pistons, the T-5 swap, and a little 100 shot of ZEX. It'll make for some nice Youtube vids in about a year, just messing around pulling on some imports and Mustangs on the highway.

Not really. They were invented to take advantage of the high air pressure at the bottom of the windshield, same reason the AC/heater air comes from there. Cooler air is a side benefit.

Although most people use them, and their most recognized function is to extract heat from the engine bay.

Which is a bit difficult, since there is a seal between the hood and the cowl.

I would say they are used just as often to increase engine clearance.

Well yeah that's a given, with the 5 inch cowls. I was only thinking of the actual functions of them.

Well I will be installing a 84 t/a powerbuldge hood in a few weeks so I should feel it a little more as well. My only issue when I bought this cleaner was hood clearance I ended up buying a small tub of play doh ,putting it on the cleaner (3 points) and then closing the hood ,it was very close but clears within a ***** hair.
