LG4 Intake Manifold

Hey everybody, I just wanted to post up and ask if anyone had any information about the LG4 intake manifold as far as the performance aspect of it. I have one off of my old 85 just picking up dust in the garage. From the looks of them they seem like a fair piece, maybe on par with an Edelbrock Performer? Kinda what I was hoping to find out, I would really like to see if the little LG4 intake is really any good.

I was thinking a sleeper LG4 5 speed with T-tops sounded like a killer project as a fun car ala cheap. Something like an early 80s T/A or Formula. Rebuild the engine with a 331 setup and port the factory 416s because its proven that they flow. Fiddle with it a little but keep it factory appearing. Use TES headers that are uncoated, and try to pass them as factory manifolds...or close. Maybe put down 275 whp? What do you guys think? Is the factory LG4 intake capable of supporting anywhere near that HP level?

I dont know its just something about a stock aspect I like. And even high 13s is respectable, ESPECIALLY for a "Stock" 305. Its like slapping people everywhere who junked a perfectly good one of these cars. Maybe I can stir some excitement into the third gen community back home by spanking some people with this lil car.

P.S. Searched, found nothing. Nobody has faith in the LG4 haha.

Re: LG4 Intake Manifold

The aluminum LG4/L69 intake is not bad. Not great, but not bad. Its about on par with a base level Performer.

You should avoid the 331 stroker kit for the 305 though, they aren't as good in reality as they seem on paper. The tiny bore of the 305 doesn't allow big valves and causes valve shouding problems. In short, the small bores are barely sufficient for a 305. They would really restrict a stroker motor based on the 305 block. You'd be better off with a 350 or 383, or leaving the 305 as a 305.

The NHRA H/SA index that these cars typically run in is 12.45 in the 1/4 mile. To be competitive in stock, you usually have to run about a second below the index. And, you have to run a stock unmodified intake and stock unmodified heads. Cam duration, gears, stall speed, etc., are pretty much wide open, but if the intake won't flow, those things won't matter much.

Of course, the typical NHRA stock class car isn't at all streetable, but you get the point.

Typical magazine article numbers give the Performer a 10-20 HP gain over the stock intake on a 350. On a 305, the difference would be less. If you even buy into there being a difference at all.
