Acceleration issue
Acceleration issue
I've got an '85 Trans Am with a 305 and a 4 barrel carb. I had a rebuilt carburetor installed and now when I start it up after it sits overnight it sputters and won't accelerate for about a block or two then it seems to straighten out and run good. I tried warming it up before driving it by giving it a little gas and I would get a lot of backfiring under the hood. It would run pretty good once the backfiring stopped. Appears to be running a little rich. Got black exhaust marks on the bumper. Took it in to a local well equipped garage to see if the timing was off and they told me everything is fine. No engine lights are coming on so I'm at a loss. MAF sensor? Oxgen sensor? Bad carb sensor? Ran carb cleaner with valve treatment throught it and that cut down on the backfiring.

Re: Acceleration issue
Sounds like the choke isn't adjusted properly- staying too far closed on initial startup. The vacuum canister on the pass. side of the carb determines how far the choke is pulled open immediately after first cold startup. Once the choke begins the warm up it opens on it's own and the problem goes away until the next cold startup.
Re: Acceleration issue
Thank you for your information and soon reply to my question.
