Carb Tuning and Timing Question
I have a 1990 Camaro its a 305. It has a cam
ADV. Duration (INT/EXH): 288 / 288
Duration @ .050" (INT/EXH): 214 / 214
Valve Lift (INT/EXH): .443 / .443
Lobe Centerline: 112
Power Range: 1700-5200.
I am running an edelbrock 1404 carb and just completed the TBI to Carb swap. I never had a carb so i would like to know how to tune it. whats the first thing i should do the car starts and runs and drives good but i want it perfect with the cam i have. As timing goes should i be timing it the same way as TBI what is a good timing point?
Also what do i need to do to the ALDL to wire the torque converter lockup and will the ecm need to be plugged in. also if theres anything else i should know please let me know

Re: Carb Tuning and Timing Question
Whe I went carb, I tuned for maximum vacuum at the carb. Then I adjusted timing up a tad, and readjusted carb to see if I could get more vacuum. I kept at this until I ended up with the highest possible vacuum - I think I ended up at about 12*BTDC base timing.
On the TC Lockup - not sure if you can do it with the ECM - but there are kits available - check the sticky above for details.

Re: Carb Tuning and Timing Question
I wouldn't waste your money on a tcc lock up kit, unless you want it to work automatically, which I think sucks. All you need is a simple toggle switch, your existing wiring going to, and inside of the tranny are perfectly usable just the way they are. It's probably a two wire solenoid, in which it needs ground on the tan/blk wire and positive on the red-purplish wire. The green is simply comes from a 4th gear switch in the trans. You don't need to do anything with it. In my car, I have positive running ffrom the car through the second set of contacts on the brake light switch (near the pedal) and then a toggle that breaks the ground to the tcc solenoid which is connected to the tan/blk wire which you can find going to your aldl connector under the dash. I'm doing this off the top of my head, but I'm pretty sure I got the colors right. It takes no time to get used to the manual switch for tcc lockup, and then you can lock it when you want. As far as jetting goes, if you really want to get technical, I would buy a wideband 02 sensor with gauge. I have one from Innovate Motorsports and its awesome. LC-1 with DB digital gauge. You can find it on ebay for around $200. As long as you are no longer running your original distributor, your ecm shouldn't be needed for anything. If you have electric fans, you'll have to change that around, but other than that, that should be it. Hope this helps, good luck.

With the vacuum advance disconnected, set the timing at 12 degrees BTDC as a baseline.
Do your carb adjustments with the vacuum advance attached.
