Got a little problem i have a 1989 camaro rs converted to carb and im swapping over from an electric fuel pump to a mechanical well when i took the fuel pump block off plate off there seems to be a fuel pump rod already in there and it is stuck any help whould be appreciated seeing as my last option is drilling a hole in the sob and tapping it and putting a bolt in there and i really dont want to do that. Any ideas why its even there?

 

If the smog pump has been removed and the upper mount hole has been filled with a bolt, then that bolt may be too long and holding the fuel pump pushrod.

 

smog pump is still there might be the bolt is too long still? just curious as heck why their is a fuel pump rod already in there if its a full length rod and not a cut down one i may be screwed and its mushroomed on the end

 

well took off the smog pump and the bracket wasnt even bolted down at the bottom. Pushed the rod up towards the cam and cranked the motor over pushed the rod then stopped at the same spot where i cant get it pulled out at. I now belive that the rod may be mushroomed at the end and im screwed lol looks like im spending alot more money now on an elec fuel pump and the right fuel press regulator

 

It can be gotten to from the top but that involves pulling the cam.

 

which also involves taking the valve covers off intake lossening the rockers taking lifters and pushrods out damn might as well pull the motor and freshen it up a bit lol wish my stroker motor was done lol

 

Yeah. It's a shame cause it's probably only gummed up a little. Like you I'm surprised there's even a push rod in there. What happened to your original in-tank pump?

 

original owners didnt have the return line hooked up and was just running the sending line with a regulator on it burnt out the pump a lil after i started driving it on my own ima try to put the mechanical fuel pump on tonight see if the pump can push the rod back up we will see what happens lol. also the orig owners treated the car like a pos i got a roller ima restore and turn it into a pro street car instead of this one just drive this intell im done with that one then ima swap some things here and there to the other when the time comes i got a 388 stroker im probaly going to put in it for a bit to break the motor in.

 

Yeah, if the rod will go up to meet the cam you should be fine.
