Quadrajet Mixture Screw Setting

I bought a used '83 305 that was running, but poorly. It had a 4bbl Quadrajet on it that was in desperate need of a rebuild. It has been rebuild once already. The carb numbers show it to be from a late 70's 350.

Anyway, I rebuilt the carb. I turned in the mixture screws to record their position before removal. One took 5 1/2 turns and the other 1 1/2 turns. Obviously neither was correct.

The engine has a new performance cam so when I get it started up I need to be able to break in the cam immediately. I don't have time to mess around getting the carb adjusted.

What would be a good initial setting for the mixture screws? It doesn't need to be perfect, just run fairly well for 30 or 45 minutes for the cam breakin.

Also, turning the screws with needle nose pliers sucks. Is there a special tool for them? I have not seen one yet.

Thanks for your help,

Steve

Re: Quadrajet Mixture Screw Setting

By anychance are you talking about the screws that are the bottom front that has one in each side?
I would start with three turns on the car. Everytime I read on adjustment for a car they always say to start with three turns.
Also to adjust the screws they sell a tool for the screws at autozone. Well that is where I got mines at.

Saritasan,

Thank you for your reply. That was what I needed. I'll go check autozone for the tool too.

Thanks!
