Bought a 87 gta sorting out issues. Help please.

I've been reading the stickys but I want to be sure I'm going in the right direction. I bought a 87 gta with a carb swapped 350. The car runs but has Bad idle problems and Doesn't have much power.

1. The engine has a mech. fuel pump pulling threw the old intank pump, I need to get rid of the intank pump for this setup to work correctly right? Would this cause my idle problems?

2. I've read about the vac. advance on the hei dizzy's but i'm still unsure about it. Does the vac. advance on the dizzy need to be hooked up to the carb?

Thanks for any advice, I know the carb prob needs to be rebuilt since the car sat for a good while. (That might be causing my idle prob.)

If it still has the intank pump I could see it not running very good, did they remove the intank pump.On my 92 6cyl to 355ci I removed the old intank pump and put a new steel line on.I used a little rubber hose to connect to the fuel hose the intank pump would have connected to.

1) The mech pump will have a hard time pulling enough fuel though the dead in-tank pump - get rid of the in-tank pump or else use it with a reurn-style regulator and get rid of the mechanical pump.

2) Yes the vac adv on the dist. gets connected to the carb. But timing needs to be set with it disconnected and with that port on the carb plugged (so their is no vacuum leak).

Yeah i did some brief google work and it looks like the majority of the Arizona TB's are just like this one. I am not sure what it's designed to bolt onto. I have a stock TB on my 92 and the cable won't reach (I held them up next to eachother) I have the stock 87 TB and it's a stud mount like drew said, and I have a stock Early LT1 TB and it won't work with it either. Idk what Arizona speed designed this for. But.... a little harness drilling and cutting and we are in business!! The back of it still hits the 90 degree fitting on the fuel rail crossover so I will have to trim that down just a touch on the very back side, but it should work no problem.

Re: Bought a 87 gta sorting out issues. Help please.

I bought an 87 a couple years ago and I will tell you what I did. It was all stock , computer controlled quadrajet, but would not run right no matter what . Had bad intank pump , and bad ecm. It is a manual car and could only find used ( 30 year old) ecm , did not want Dorman. So I got an Ac delco vacuum advanced distributor, non cc quadrjet, and a carter 6psi pump with relay, mounted on pass side rail in engine bay. The Carter pump pumps to mechanical pump, that goes to carb. The quadrajet will only take the fuel it needs, rest goes back to tank, keeps fuel moving/ keep cool. Car has ran perfect for the past 2 years . I would only run a qudrajet, I am only cruising to work when it is nice or driving the kids around. It is an LG4 engine . Love these cars, seems people don't care about cars any longer.
