car runs REALLY rich. what to do?

just rebuilt my carb and now my car runs really rich and i have to hold the gas and the break at a stop after it gets warm, or else when i push the gas it almost dies, or does die, then its a pain to start after that. it smells alot like exhaust and gas fumes inside the car, my plugs foul out, and it is always putting out a blackish blue cloud.. i took the carb apart over and over again and re checked the float and needle. it seems like nothing works. what should i check? ive been having this problem for a long time now, it makes the car not so enjoyable to drive anymore

What kind of carb do you have? Did you have this problem before the rebuild too? Was the carb ever rejetted?

Re: car runs REALLY rich. what to do?

i have the stock q-jet 4 barrel. i didnt have the problem before the rebuild as bad..it was a little off but it still ran really well. as far as i know it was never rejetted, at least since ive had it. also something to add- when the rebuild was done and it ran like crap, i tried to put an edelbrock carb on it. it caught on fire due to the angle of the hose and not being clamped tight, it sprayed right at my distributer..the fire was put out fast, and some vacuum lines were melted, but i replaced as many as i could and got the edelbrock 600cfm carb on. the only problem with the edelbrock was it idled very high, smelled funny when driving, (almost like olive oil) and it had NO power. it didnt want to die though, it ran decent with the edelbrock, just sounded like a 350 and drove like a 4 cylinder. so i put the q-jet back on and now it is so rich idk what to do..buy a remanned q-jet seems like my only option i just want to make sure its not something else before i put out 300$ that i dont have to ebay

The reason you had no power was because you had zero timing advance due to you not replacing the CCC distributor with a normal one.

Don't ever buy a 'reman' carb unless you're prepared to rebuild the rebuild. Remans are almost always slapped together junk.

So if you have the stock Qjet on your car then it's a CCC carb. If you're running as rich as you're saying, your Check Engine light should've came on. Did it?

When you rebuilt the carb, did you set the lean stop of the MC solenoid correctly? Did you tamper with the idle mixture screws and/or air bleed? What's your dwell at?

Are you sure you have no vac leaks anywhere?

Re: car runs REALLY rich. what to do?

A common issue on rebuilt Q-jets is that the needle is held inside the float arm incorrectly which can cause the same issues as a float being adjusted incorrectly. The needle clip should be attached to the float arm from the back side, not from the side through one of the two holes, or not from the front of the carb with the rounded edge. How do I know, because I have had the exact same issue while dialling my q-jet. If everything else is OK float level ect..I'd check this out.

Floats are also known to get saturated, which makes them not float as well. Result is even though it is mechanically set correctly, it takes more fuel in the bowl for it to shut off the flow.

Is your SES light coming on?

Re: car runs REALLY rich. what to do?

My check engine light is on but it was on long before this because I accidently messed it up somehow so it wont read codes or turn off.I didn't mess with the idle mixture screws...and I'm not sure how to set the lean stop for the mc solenoid. No vacuum leaks that I have been able to find either.
I COULD be having the problem that 1983zsled says with the needle clip being attached from the wrong side..before the rebuild it was clipped in the holes, but I saw in the directions that that is the wrong way, so i clipped it the way i thought it was supposed to be...but I put it on the rounded edge, so I'll try flipping that around to the back today and see what happens..

I also checked to make sure the float wasnt bad, it seems to be ok. thanks for all the help so far

Does the MCS click when you turn the ignition on before starting the engine?
