1406 acceleration problem
we got my car out for a test run today, and at WOT there's hardly any acceleration at all, if it's just sittin in park it revs up great, but not when under a load, i figured something to do with the secondaries maybe? any help would be great!
Thanks,
Kohl

Re: 1406 acceleration problem
New, used or rebuilt? Idle mixture and speed settings? Rods and jets? Choke open or closed when you try this?

it's a remenufacture one from summit, and its on the stock setting, and choke was open when we took the air cleaner off

Re: 1406 acceleration problem
So the stock settings of a 1406 are pretty lean. Try buying a 1487 carb rebuild kit and re-tune the carb. If you got the book for the carb with it, (you mentioned it was a reman'd carb, did you still get everything with it?) it will have a chart for the 1406 and it gives you the rods and jets to change for better performance or milage. I re-tuned my 1406 and it really helped.

Re: 1406 acceleration problem
Be sure to read the Edelbrock manual from beginning to end, and then follow the detailed instructions inside for the tuning process as well.

Re: 1406 acceleration problem
alright i just finished reading the manual, I understand the operation tons more, but i dont understand why you cant see the secondaries open up during WOT while your looking at it under the hood sitting still? but it seems like i am too lean in the power mode... if i go up 1-2 stages in power should i go up in cruise mode also?

Re: 1406 acceleration problem
no i have not done any test yet, its just while you driving and you stomp on WOT there's hardly anything, the motor barely rev's up. so figured when its at WOT or power mode it must be to lean, or the secondaries are not functioning at all.

Re: 1406 acceleration problem
i think i found a solution, if i am using a dual plane inatake and i dont have the adapter for the carb, could that be blocking the the secondaries butterflies from opening???

Re: 1406 acceleration problem
my inatke is a dual plane spreadbore aluminum from jegs, they dont make it anymore. so my secondaries should open. well we took the carb off and there was this clip that kept the secondaries from openin on the side. so we took it off and now they function like mechanical secondaries. we put the carb back on and tried it, made a little difference but still doggy.
so then we changed carbs, we stuck on a Qjet, which ran just as good. but still no extreme change. we think it may be the cam specs now, just i dont know a whole lot about whats good and not good.
here are the cam specs

Re: 1406 acceleration problem
have you confirmed the secondaries are opening? with the engine shut off and the air cleaner removed open the throttle all the way and push the secondary air valve open, this way you can see the secondaries. also have someone sit in the car and press the pedal to the floor and confirm that its opening the throttle all the way. simple things i know, but sometimes thats where you gotta start.

Re: 1406 acceleration problem
Put the link back on, and then try it both ways... once with the choke open, and once with it closed.

Re: 1406 acceleration problem
i just look over the 1406 360 degree view on summit and it sappears the link gets puched down when the choke is fully open, and then allows for the secondaries to work.so now that i have tested it with working secondaries the issue is most likely else where, unless it's just that lean....
