82 Camaro carb revs up after few minutes

Hello Everyone,

I have a very very low mile '82 Camaro 305 4 speed with the factory q-jet. The car sat for quite some time so I replaced the plugs, fuel, cap & rotor, o2 sensor and new gaskets in the carb and cleaned. Every fastener on the carb was barely finger tight (gaskets shrinkage?) Anyway getting to the problem. The car starts up, the choke works fine, I watch it slowly open, then after a few minutes, the engine revs up by itself 800 - 1,000 rpm's, to somewhere in the 2,200 rpm range. WHAT's up with that? I did inspect and replace some vacuum lines. The car is all stock and never messed with.
Is it carb related?
Is it timing?
Is it the whole business between open and closed loop?
It's very freaky to have this thing rev up by itself.
After or during it's episode, I tap the trottle and the idle returns to normal at about 800 rpm's.
I have no check engine light.
Thanks

When it revs up, does it do it slowley or suddenly? Does your throttle linkage move when it starts to rev?

I know on my car ( although strangly I don't notice this at all anymore ), my car will quickly rev up when going cloosed loop, but's only 100-200 RPM's.

It does it suddenly. I did not see the linkage move, but I will double check that today. I was watching on the choke side to try an see something happen. I did see the butterflies were open a little...it's alsmost like a double fast idle. It's on fast idle when immediately started, then choke opens...must be around the time it goes into closed loop, sudden 800 - 1000 rpms.

Since you have checked for a vacuum leaks and you have a quadrajet carb.
Check to see IF the carb is loose! Try and move the carb. with your hands and see if the throttle plate aka the base where the bolts go thru to the intake is loose from either the intake or the float bowl aka the center body of the carb.
The throttle plate screws sometimes loosen from gas pedal action from the body of the float bowl. This will cause a high/low irratic idle.

Do you notice a odd exaust like smell also either inside the car or engine compartment?

If you haven't opened the throttle slightly to release the fast idle cam, it will rev up to about that point when warmed up. If your car still has the underhood emissions stickers on it, you'll notice RPMs in that range being stated as the high idle set point (when warmed up).
