high idle problems
high idle problems
okay im trying to get my car drivable and being a poor college student i dont have a lot of money. my stock quadra jet needs a major overhaul. so i put a older quadra jet from a 350 i bought a while ago but it doesnt have places to hook up any wires. so i have a wire holding the choke open for now. but even when its wide open the engine is revving extremly high. and the idle screw is all the way back. so what can i do. im thinking about turning the distributor right(pretty sure thats retarding it) to slow it down, will that work

It will never work properly, because you need an older type distributor as well.
Your high idle is probably the high idle cam, on the opposite side of the carb from the idle speed screw, not dropping down like it should. It is a green colored weight-looking thing. It should be all the way down. I suspect in the choke wired-open you did it was wired it the up position.
What type of choke does your older carb have? If electric, the same wire from your CC carb should work. If "hot air", you can put the electric thermostat from you CC carb on it.
But, the real question: What is wrong with your CC carb that you think it needs a "major overhaul"? Most likely it would take less work and $'s to fix it than it would to get this bastard carb to work properly.

Re: high idle problems
If that carb is rusted out and pieces are missing, I would go on craigs list and look local for one. They can be had kinda cheap Because no amount of work will make it run right short of a massive rebuild and all the missing parts found and replaced. Is it a computer controled carb? or was it changed to a non computer carb? And no do not set the timing to lower the idle. That is the totaly wrong way to fix it. And will do more harm than good. And yes you may have the fast idle wired open with your choke. If you have a non computer q jet on it now, I will sell you a running non cc qjet for 40 dollars plus shipping to were ever you are. I know it works because it is on my car now and working/running, but I am putting a holley on it this week early like no later than tuesday-wendsday. Just PM me and I will tell you about it and get you some photos of it if you want it.
