can't find a new float
can't find a new float
Okay here is the story. I was recently given a 1968 GMC 3/4 ton truck. The truck was my grandfathers, given to my father and now my father gave it to me. Recently did a bunch of tuneup work on it. Part of it was a carb rebuild. Actually my dad did that part, I have no clue on carbs but he grew up working on them. Anyway the truck originally had the big V6 in it, but a head cracked, too expensinve to fix, and it was replaced with a 327 years ago. The carb on the 327 came with the engine, not sure the year on the engine but the carb is a quadrajet #7020006. During the carb rebuild found one of the floats had liquid in it. Never could get the liquid out, so we went ahead and put the carb back together and got it running, because I had to get it moved form where it was. I have been trying to find a new float for it with no luck. Is the carb on there some odd ball one that will be next to impossible to find parts for? Would I be better off just biting the bullet and purchasing a different reman carb that is easier to find parts for?
Re: can't find a new float
Well, all the usual suspects - Napa, Orielly, etc., none of them even had a listing for a float for the carb. Looked around on a couple carb places on line, no listing, but had not called them yet. Contacted a couple shops here in the Kansas City area where I live, not luck there either. Know of a good place to check? Thanks for the help.

I've used thecarburetorshop.com for hard-to-find vintage stuff, but they'll only sell you parts with a rebuild kit. Any of the online places should have it. I don't remember if Edelbrock had a 4M style Qjet, but if they did one of their floats should work.
I just checked the catalog, Edelbrock P/N 1985 should supposedly fit.

You can drill a REAL SMALL hole in each side of it, about a #70 or #75 should do, I'd keep them up above the fuel level; let the fluid drain out; then solder the holes back up with a VERY SMALL amount of electronic - rosin core, NOT acid, therefore not plumbing - solder.
