carb for tpi swap-and im stumped?
i am new to the forum, but not to hot rods or 3rd gens, and i just picked up a 86 z28 that the former owner was about 3/4 of the way through a carbed 350 swap.the issue im having is im pretty sure the fuel regulator is incorrect.if i drive for 10 or 12 miles, the car stalls like its out of fuel, and if it sits for 10 or 20 seconds it will take right back off.i unhooked the fuel line, ran a extra piece to a 5 gallon gas can, jumpped the underdash connecter and it filled up the can in about 5 minutes,so i think the pump is okay.the regulator that is on the car is a holley 12-704 with the return line hooked to the 2nd outlet, and the other outlet going to the carb.does it sound like a screw up on the previous guys part? thanks for any help anyone can give me,if i cant figure it out,ill pull the electric pump and run a mechanical one.

He's tried to use a deadhead regulator in a bypass application. Try a Holley 12-803BP or a Mallory 4309.

i figured that was the issue, just never fooled with an electric fuel pump before-im 36 years old but lost in time when mechanical fuel pumps, carbs and sometimes even point ruled! my 63 buick wildcat is so much simpler !thanks

would the dead head regulator cause the car to act like i described? if so,why?it acts like it ran out of gas,is that a fail safe on the fuel pump,or something else?

The flow test sounds reasonable. The dead-head reg will cause the fuel pump to overheat, which may shut it down. Then, it'll restart after given a chance to cool and recover.

It's not actually deadheading, though. It's a 2 output pump, with one output up to the carb and the other one just straight back to the tank.

Yes, regulator, not pump. I think the return is just stealing most of the flow sometimes.

thats what i think also, the 2nd output sends to much fuel back to the tank
