Stock quadrajet

I just recently purchased my new (to me) third gen Z-28 and I have never had a carburetor before in anything I have ever owned. I would like to start making some modifications to give my engine a little more than stock horsepower. I don't really want to do the LSX swap, well I do but its just not practical for me, I read that the stock carb can put out 750 cfm if tweaked right and I have also seen a lot of 600-650 cfms on performance engines. How do I make mine get that and what is it stock? There might even already be a thread about this but I am new to the board. I would at least like the horsepower that my 3s has.

The carburetor isn't even close to the first thing to start messing with to increase power. What modifications have been done to the car already, if any?

Re: Stock quadrajet

None as of yet and I wasn't planning on messing with the carb first I just wanted to get a little insight as to how to do it when I get there. It has a new exhaust system on it but its a stock setup that the previous owner just had installed so no real performance gain there but thats all thats been upgraded.

Re: Stock quadrajet

You carb flows either 650 or 750cfm though I can't recall off hand how to tell the difference. Either way, your carb is plenty big enough to run anything up to 400+HP. As stated earlier, I'd start with headers and a 3" exhaust (for single exhaust). This alone should free up 20-40hp. After that, I'd put new sway bars under it, front and rear as well as a "wonder bar". Also Polyurethane bushings all the way around. A well handling car "feels" faster because of how it handles. After this, it's all about "how much" you want to spend. Best of luck!

Re: Stock quadrajet

perfectly stated above how much you want to spend. I just put heads cam lifters intake roller rockers throttle body headders full exhaust and a few things here and there. total price was 3500 roughly. I did all the work on my friend Ryans 89 Iroc L98 tuned port. but ya it all depends on your budget.
