Re: help with a 1406

You'd probably need a 1400 to pass a visual inspection, but I'm surprised they're not demanding an OE carb.

Re: help with a 1406

Doesn't help you now with the new requirements, but just connecting a vacuum line to the canister would have worked - The 1406 has 2 small vacuum ports on the front, most use pass side one for vacuum advance distributor can, and other side isn't used usually - could have rigged a line from that to the canister.

In the 1970's, the canisters just got fumes sucked out constantly by a vacuum line on the carb. In our cars, there is a solenoid-like setup that is controlled by the ECM that opens/closes the vacuum line on the canister.

Sorry to hear of the problems. Someday here in NC they'll probably kill my inspection as well, but for now I get away with it. You can blame anyone that's not a car enthusiast - emissions would have never been required if people had stayed diligent with tuning and getting their cars tuned, as a properly tuned non-emissions car has no more emissions output than any emissions-equipped car. Think about it - we tune for performance, which means burning all the fuel we have while adding all the air we can (since a motor is an air pump). Running rich hurts performance as does running lean.

But it became a huge political issue (like everything does) proposed by a bunch of soccer moms (which don't have time to learn but have time to whine). I'm sure burning oil isn't very good for the environment, but we can burn all the oil we like in our cars which doesn't make sense. OK - I'm done ranting.

Re: help with a 1406

Sell the car for $1 to a friend, cousin, sister, etc. in a different county/state that doesn't have emissions, then register it in their name and get new tags. There's always a way around the system. Even though I'm not required to pass emissions, I always go to a non-emissions county in NC to get mine inspected - they never even look at anything except lights, horn, tread, wipers.

His problem isn't the purge (which goes into the PCV system), it's the bowl vent.

Re: help with a 1406

The vapor recovery system controls emissions that aren't measured by the sniffer, but are significant sources of hydrocarbon emissions.

So they say. If it was such a concern to the environment, wouldn't there be vapor recovery at the refineries, tank farms, and on the delivery truck valves?

It's TAX DOLLARS baby! Everything revolves around the almighty tax revenue!

Hope I don't sound anti-environment here. But in the end, nothing good we do in the US, Canada, Japan, Oz and Europe will ever put a dent in the daily damage caused by Mexico, China, Soviet, and remaining 3rd world non-standardized pollution-rich countries.
