Re: how to rig up electric choke

t-tap it off the heavy pink wire for the coil.
that will give you keyed power.

Re: how to rig up electric choke

Cool. Thanks. And do I just take like a piece of 12 gauge and hook it to plug on choke then hook into pink wire within the bundle of dizzy wires?

Re: how to rig up electric choke

either way.......

it will be a 12-14 ga. pink wire that used to go to the coil (if you had the small cap) or dist. B+ (if you have the large cap)

Re: how to rig up electric choke

so you should have ran the pink wire in the car to the B+ on that dist.

the car runs,right?

Re: how to rig up electric choke

Yes. Car runs great. The car had the motor and carb setup in it when I got it. I have not gone through everything yet, but I know it has a lot of wires running into distributer. Like I said, it was originally a fuel injected car so I am still sorting the bugs out. But it starts usually as long as it is not to cold, but I am sick of reving it for ten minutes to get it warmed up, so that is why I would like choke to work. Plus it idles a lot better when it works

Re: how to rig up electric choke

ok to shorten this up,they should have used the original pink 12-14 ga. wire to the B+ on the dist.

if they didnt, you will just need to find the power wire for the dist. it will be the heavy one. check it with a test light that it only has power with the key on.

and thats the one you tap for the choke.

Re: how to rig up electric choke

The wire you plan on splicing it into cuts down to about 7volts after the car is initially started. May affect choke operation?

THAT WIRE FEEDS THE COIL AND MODULE,IT REMAINS AT BATTERY VOLTAGE.

this guy must be talking about the resistor wire only used in points ignition setups. has 12v while cranking to assist in starting, then drops down to 7v. not used anymore.

Re: how to rig up electric choke

yes,its a common problem. the factory wires the choke in with the oil pressure switch.all that it prevents is the choke from starting its opening process without the motor running,ex. you go out to your ice cold car, turn the key forward and play the radio for 15 minutes without the motor running, then decide to start it.the choke will have fully opened and the motor is still cold.
THAT IS NOT LIKELY TO HAPPEN

(worst case, turn of the key for 5 minutes and the choke will reclose)

so just tapping the key on power feeding the dist. is a easy and reliable fix.i have done it to my own cars, and customers(especially when upgrading the old heat riser style choke to electric),and never had a problem, also the choke coil draws less than 5 amps .

i love the comments by people who know nothing about cars.
