Re: Got a Carb question

is something broken? there is nothing wrong with a good running tbi engine, there is little to gain from just swapping a carb on it.

Re: Got a Carb question

well im having issues starting it takes somtimes like 5-7 mins to get it started but then somtimes it starts fine no issues so i was wondering for drag racing if it would be better to go with a carb and is it going to be like a 3 day project switching it ?

Re: Got a Carb question

1) carb swap is not federally legal, but feds don't check
2) carb swap not state/county legal in most areas, so check local inspection laws
3) can't just swap the carb ... there's other suff has to be done

- have to swap distributor to a vacuum advanced dist ($125)
- have to use a fuel pressure regulator (Mallory 4309) to reduce fuel pressure from the FI fuel pump ($90)
- have to install a torque converter lockup into the tranny if it's a automatic car ($100)
- need a new intake ($150 - $300)

The computer will no longer do anything since no more TBI unit, so all that stuff has to be done as well.

So, with an average carb, your looking at about $900 to swap to carb.

After all that, you still have crappy TBI heads, crappy TBI exhaust, crappy rear gears that are all still holding you back.

No drag racing with a 305 anyway - waste of time thinking about it. No respect at the track for a 305 - can't even get into a stock Honda class without getting heads/exhaust/gears - your motor has 170 hp, carbing, heads, exhaust, rear gears, cam ... might get you to 300hp, but you still have a 3500 pound car. If wanting to race, you need a 350 motor at least.

Starting issues not TBI related, it's something else - tell us what the exact issue/symptom is and we'll help you with it. Probably ignition module, pickup coil, etc.

Re: Got a Carb question

Read Read Read - there's a gazillion threads here on everything from motr swaps to getting more out of the 305. But if it were me, I would put anything on the 305 that couldn't be transferred to a 350. Assuming it's legal to carb the car in your area, this limits you to carb swap stuff I mentioned above, exhaust, and rear gears. If you desire more than that, a 350 or larger swap is in your future.

I swapped in an old mild 350 and carbed it - car runs nice, much more fun to drive, but no drag car. I got a used 350 for $600 carb to pan, cost me another $500 to swap it in.

Not really a good idea, you either want one or the other. To get a car that will drag well makes it not so much fun to drive on the street, and vise versa. Keep the 305 TBI, get it running right. Then go buy a rolling chassis and build yourself an all out drag car.

Not saying there's noone on here that takes their DD to the track, but they dont expect it to do a 7 sec 1/4 mile either...
