Idiot need Carb Advice

Okay, so i just switched from a Quadrajet (which i am assuming wasn't computer controlled because there was only a lead going to the Electric Choke) to an Edelbrock 1406, Because my car no longer would start and instead of rebuilding it for the umpteenth time i just trashed it. And no one please bash because i changed it out, its my car i did what i felt was best. But i digress.

Well now my car starts wonderfully on the first time, but now she's not idling and sounds really rough when i force her to idle (aka have my foot on the gas) (however she has her normal purr while accelerating), also extra smoke is coming from what i guess is the exhaust recirc lines. i was told it could be that new carb needs tuned, however, i am an idiot and can't read the tuning instructions in the manual it came with, and also wonder if it could be something else.

My Car, FYI, is a 1984 Camaro Z28 V8 5.0l G

Also this is A) My first project car and B) The first car I've done most of the work on my self, w/ minimal advice from mechanic like people; so please be easy on me.

Does the car have a vacuum advanced distributor or a computerized distributor? If it's still a computer distributor, you'll need a vacuum advanced distributor.

Tuning is easy with a 1406:

Economy - With the engine running at a normal operating tempature, starting with either air/fuel adjustment screw, turn the screw in or clockwise slowly until the idle just starts to drop, then turn the screw back (counterclockwise) 1/4 - 1/2 turn. Then, adjust the other air/fuel ratio screw the same. Finally, adjust the idle screw to a desirable idle setting.

Performance - Same as economy, except you want to initially turn the screws out (counterclockwise) until the idle just starts to drop, then turn 1/4 - 1/2 turn back in (clockwise), and reset idle at desirable setting.

What is your timing set at?

Not really sure what the point of a "performance" idle is. I don't need a lot of performance when the car is just sitting there.

The best thing to do is follow the procedure in the book. You're not likely to find a better explanation of a carb tuning process than what Edelbrock has laid out.

Holley explains everything on their website as well for counter-reference. I'd say read both just to cover everything.
