Converting to carb, using EFI fuel pump

What if you just put an inline regulator between the stock in-tank pump and the carb? I was told I could do this with an aftermarket regulator, such as the Holley 12-803 (no bypass return line to tank)... I got to thinking though, wouldnt the pump just grenade the regulator with the ammount of pressure its pushing? Thats quite a step, going from around 50 psi down to 6.

You'll blow your fittings, your line and you'll probably blow up your pump if you run that much pressure redux with no return. Hook up a bypass regulator, either a Holley or Mallory inline using the factory return line and you'll be fine. I installed an intake pump (255lph) in my carbed car, running a Mallory bypass regulator and I'm sitting at about 6psi. No problems so far.

Use a bypass regulator with an intank pump on a carb. On a customers car that was TBI I still used a bypass regulator just because they're better anyway. If your using a TPI pump its a must, dead heading MPFI pump can go upwards of 80 psi. Trying to regulate that down to 6psi without having a bypass will not work well

I moved these posts out of the sticky. The question was inappropriate there.

Re: Converting to carb, using EFI fuel pump

Ok I have read many post about the fuel regulator and again I'm getting confused. So will some one tell me if I have this right in my head. On my 92 firebird that had a v6 there is one line that goes from the tank to the motor and then a second that goes back to the tank which is the return. All I have to do is use the fuel pump that is already IN the tank and then just install a fuel regulator under the hood and I should be good with my carbed 350.

I'm sorry for asking questions that have already be answered its just easier if I ask how I see it in my mind. Thanks

You are correct. Generally, the two lines run near each other. The larger line is the fuel line, the smaller line is the return line. The larger line goes to the -8an fitting, the smaller line goes to the bypass side (usually on teh bottom). The directions that come with the regulator will tell you which is which. When you set the regulator at 5.5-6psi, you won't get any more pressure than that through the line.
