84 camaro quadrajet problems!!!

Hello, today I went to do emissions for my car (automatic 84 camaro rs)and I failed the hc portion(unburnt fuel) with a 14.6 when I am only allowed 3.0. When I run the car I can smell gas all the time even when I adjust the distributor cap. Sometimes the Carb backfires and lights the air filter on fire and other times it stalls out when I am stopped in drive. It is a four barrel quadrajet (electronic) so I can't adjust anything on it. Could my problems be from the timing being off, the accelerator pump, or just a bad Carb? If anyone can think of someway to fix this I would appreciate any advise. Thanks!!!

You most certainly CAN adjust an electronic Qjet, you just need some special tools to do so ( IF it needs adjusting ). Your particular problem could be caused by many things, but it sounds like you need to time it properly first.

I will have to find those tools then, and sorry I don't know very much about carbs because my first car was a dumb civic with programmed fuel injection.

So after inspecting my engine, I found that a few wires and hoses were unplugged from the special people who work at the emissions. I reattatched all of them except for one wire that I think goes towards the bottom half of the engine. It smells alot better with most of the gas smell gone now.
