Engine won't idle

Hey, I have an 89 Firebird with a carbed 350, and when it's running, it doesn't seem to stay idling. I have to give it gas every few seconds or it will slow down and die. The previous owner said it was because there was no exhaust and the backpressure caused it, but the guys in the exhaust forum said that was false. I need to get an exhaust on the car before I can tune the carb, but can anyone help me? It also does the same thing while driving. I have to give it a little gas every once in a while to prevent it from dying on me. I'd really rather get it fixed so that when I get it registered and licensed, it doesn't die in the middle of the road or anything.

Thanks!!
Peter

Re: Engine won't idle

Need to know:

1) What carb?
2) What fuel pump? Internal or external?
3) What fuel pressure regulator?
4) Have you changed the fuel filter?
5) What's timing set at?

Re: Engine won't idle

It is a Rochester Q-jet that came off of a truck, and I don't know anything else... I have had the car since Saturday and haven't had much chance to look at it. I'll see what I can do to find those answers shortly so that I can get more accurate help.

Re: Engine won't idle

Is it a computer controlled carb? Is there a vacuum-advanced distributor or a computer controlled distributor?

Re: Engine won't idle

The number on the carb says 17085212, which means it's from an 85 automatic, and the other number is 2937 HPA, but I haven't found out what that number means yet.

I have not found out any of the other questions, but will in due time...

Thanks in advance!
