Going carb, TCC lock up question
Im switching to a carbed 350 from a 305 tpi and I was wondering if you could make the 700R4 always lockup in 4th and by vacuum in 2nd and 3rd. I heard if you put a 1/4in check ball in the solenoid it will lock up in 2nd, 3rd and 4th without any wiring but im not sure if this is good when it shifts if it doesn't unlock while shifting. I do like hard shifts though
What do you guys think?

Re: Going carb, TCC lock up question
you can get a vacuum switch for lockup off a non cc carbed 3rd gen to control lockup, or rig one yourself, or get an aftermarket kit for it. you dont need the converter to lock up in any gear but 4th, and only while maintaining a constant cruising speed.
Re: Going carb, TCC lock up question
I can't see any reason at all why anyone would want to have a lockup feature for anything but top gear. I think it would drive like total crap having it lockup in 2nd and 3rd and can't imagine a senario where it would be beneficial in any way.
Re: Going carb, TCC lock up question
There are a variety of lockup kits available for non-computer cars. TCI make a vacuum one which locks in 3rd and 4th at cruise. Painless make a similar kit too. B&M make one that engages at certain speeds which is controlled with a ****. With the right valve body you can do the check ball thing you are talking about, this stuff comes with the Transgo shift kit. You can always try a manual switch and experiment to see what you like.
What are you trying to achieve? Most cars are setup to lock 4th at cruise and at about 45mph, some lock in 3rd. I don't think many lock in 2nd. Some drag racers like to lock 3rd for a little higher trap speed.
