Holley hesitation
Holley hesitation
Hi Guys
I am new to this and may be posting in the wrong place but I need help.
I have a Suzuki Samurai in which I have installed a Camaro drivetrain. +.040 305 sbc, turbo 350.
High rise airgap single plane intake, 202 valves, mild cam, headers. 3" pipes with cherrybombs.
I live in Jamaica and built it up out of what was available.
I have a Rebuilt Holley 1850S
This works Ok but boggs on initial acceleration.
If I give it a second pump it gets up and goes.
I changed the Pump cam to a blue one in number 2 hole and the squirter to a 35. Now it accelerates great on initial acceleration but hesitates badly after a second of acceleration and a second pump will pick it up and it goes great. I know little about carbs so would appreciate any suggestions.

Dear Cosmik Debris,
Thank you for your reply.
Regarding the powervalve I am assuming it is standard (65?) and new as it was a factory rebuild.
I have since tried out other combos.
Orange cam in # 1 hole (Bad hesitation on initial acceleration)
Blue cam in # 2 hole (Good initial acceleration, stumble after about 1 second)
Brown cam in # 1 hole (Great initial acceleration, a miss if you stay in it and backfired)
Green cam in # 1 hole (Good initial acceleration, slight stumble on further acceleration.)
I know very little about carburettors as my experience has been mostly with fuel injection and I had a friend who did the tuning.
The engine swap was just a fun project. To fit it in I widened the front half of the frame 4”, made a solid front axle, and put in a complete Camaro train. shortened both rear end and driveshaft (about 18 inches) and shoe horned it all in. I had to move the center of the firewall back 7”.
This is just a driver I built to **** off the Taxi drivers here who will get up beside you the force you to make a gap. With this I just keep ½ a fender ahead of them and it leaves them hung out.
As a matter of interest I was born in Christchurch and went to Shirley Boys High.

Re: Holley hesitation
Have a look at the sticky thread above about Holley tuning and follow it through. The power valve maybe the wrong value for your application. It provides that initial enrichment when the vacuum changes as you start to accelerate.
I played in a Rock n' Roll band with a teacher from Shirley Boys for about 20 years. Christchurch is not a lot of fun at the moment. We've had three or four major earthquakes in the last 18 months, 8000 aftershocks and the city is pretty much gone.
Cheers

Re: Holley hesitation
Did you hurt your power valve when it backfired?
Re: Holley hesitation
Thanks for the advice. I will try the tuning and see what I can get. The problem is there are no Holley parts here to experiment with. I have to import anything I need, Including gaskets. All I have is a set of pump cams, 3 different size squirters, and a couple of larger jets.. I used it yesterday as a driver and I found that if I pull the choke during the flat spot it will keep accelerating normaly. To my untrained mind this would suggest I am going lean during harder acceleration.
I was sorry to hear about Christchurch. I have many happy memories. I have heard that there are a lot of areas that may not be rebuilt on due to liquified soil.

Not yet.
This is Jamaica. Land of the rice burners. I have to try and find a vacuume gage.
As soon as I get a chance I am going to reset my rockers and make sure I don't have a tight valve. Next I will check for a vacuume leak. After I am sure all of them are right then I will start on the carb. If I didn't have to work I would get this done much quicker.
