Holley carb help.....

I just purchased a 86 z28 305. The guy i bought it from said he just put the carb on there and didn't tune it. After i got the car home i noticed that the electric choke isn't hooked up and now it having trouble starting and its wanting to die once it does crank.

its getting plenty of gas and timings doesn't seem to be a issue. This is my first carberated buy so any info with help.

Re: Holley carb help.....

I would try to hook up the electric choke, but it still won't start right probably. Do you know how to tune the carb? I would try to find someone you know that knows about holley carbs. I can't really just help over the computer, but my dad knows a lot about them.

Welcome to the forum though!

Re: Holley carb help.....

I hooked up the electric choke and didn't really see a change. I have been tinkering with the timing, idle screw and the choke adjustment but im not really getting anywhere. it seems that the choke wont let up. Not really sure how to fix it without getto rigging it up

Re: Holley carb help.....

The electric choke will only kick in when the motor is cold, and all it does is raise the rpms and open/close the choke appropriately to help keep it running on those cold mornings and what not. The timing could be the issue, what is the base timing at now? The choke should open while it warms up, so not sure why it's doing that. Someone else might chime in, or i'll ask my dad later

the best help for a holley carb is a big ol hammer, then do yourself a favor and get a proper quadrajet or at least a edelbrock carb

wow where do all these clowns come from? Your uneducated opinion has no place in this help thread..

OP start here: http://holley.com/TechService/Library.asp
read everything once you finish, read it again. then read this: http://www.bob2000.com/carb.htm
Then find your way to youtube and search for holley tuning videos, watch all of the "official" ones put out by holley.
By then you should be able to dial in your carb, or at least know what needs to be changed.

Good luck! and dont listen to anyone that is obviously confused by the brilliance that is a holley carb.

I'd also recommend picking up this book. I'd even go so far as to calling it the bible of holley carbs

I strongly disagree, I have had a 750 edelbrock, and a 600 holley and tuned they ran amazing with no problems. A quadrajet is another good carb with gigantic secondaries! I have one down in my basement that I would love to throw on something, plastic case and I believe 850cfm.

I liked my edelbrock because I could get to the adjustment screws a lot easier, but it would be a tough decision if I were buying a new carb. Everyone has their opinion though..

And thanks jwdomino, great info! Will definetely read later!

Re: Holley carb help.....

Please tell me this isn't another thread about a carb problem...caused by someone running a computer controlled distributor? If the original distributor is still in there, that is your real problem. If the person did convert it to a regular HEI, the next step is to figure out the timing curve. Last on the list will be the carb.

Add to that that a Holley won't bolt to a factory intake manifold, so how was that handled?

The factory electric choke was internally grounded, so only one wire went to it. Most aftermarket electric chokes (including every Holley I've seen) are isolated and require both a power wire and a ground wire. So, just hooking up the factory power wire to the Holley electric choke thermostat won't do anything.
