Idle Stop Solenoid

I have an 82 Pace Car with a 4bbl. I replaced the idle stop solenoid a couple of months ago with a Standard Ignition #ES110, Everything was good until tonight. Put the defroster on and idle went up over 2500. Shut defroster off idles fine. I checked the solenoid the way the service manual says and the plunger doesn't move in and out when you apply power or take it away. When the wire is checked with a test light, it lights like the manual says it's supposed to. I had to make up a jumper wire because the plug on the new solenoid was in a different spot than the original. I checked the jumper wire and all is fine. Everything leads me to believe the solenoid is bad. Any other opinions? Does Standard Ignition have any type of warrenty on their parts? Thanks

Re: Idle Stop Solenoid

You can adjust the solenoid so your idle won't be so high. 2500 rpms is WAY too much to just compensate for the A/C compressor.

And also, the solenoid won't just push the throttle blade open (it's a little "archaic"). It just does simply what you said: idle STOP. Meaning you have to have part throttle and it just changes where the idle retracts to. In this case, slightly higher on the throttle.

If you still have the factory stickers under the hood, it should say what RPM the idle should be.

Re: Idle Stop Solenoid

Thank you for your reply. Would the plunger travel change after a period of time. It has been on the car for about 3 months. I have run it before with the defroster on and everything was fine until tonight. I'm assuming to adjust the plunger you just turn it clockwise to adjust it in further?

Re: Idle Stop Solenoid

I'd imagine the plunger shouldn't change on the carburetor. So that seems a little strange. Did you rebuild the carburetor at all or anything? I'd imagine that could tweak a few things but 2500 rpms seems quit alot.

Yes, turn in C.W. You'll figure it out.

Re: Idle Stop Solenoid

Nope didn't change anything. As soon as I opened the throttle, the idle stop plunger would extend out not allowing the throttle linkage to return. I called the parts store where I got the solenoid and they are going to warranty it. I'll see what a new one does. According to the service manual, to check it you turn the key on, turn on the ac, crack the linkage and the plunger should drop away, which it does. When you plug the feed wire back in it extends. When you pull the feed wire off again it doesnt drop away like it should. I'm assuming it's bad. Thanks for the info.

Re: Idle Stop Solenoid

I ordered a solenoid from Rock Auto. This one came with the connector on the correcet side and seems to be working fine, The parts store also warrentied the ES110. The problem I found with the ES110 is I have to make up a jumper wire because the wire with the connector isn't long enough to reach over to the blade on the solenoid.

Re: Idle Stop Solenoid

On this solenoid you got now, are you able to adjust how much it extends out? This needs to be done so that you are able to tune the engine RPM to compensate for the AC turning on.
