87 z28. going from ccc to standard carb. will this distributor work ok? it says it works for a roller camshaft which i believe 87s are (305 lg4 by the way) im about to order it from summit but want to make sure it will work. thanks! http://www.summitracing.com/parts/NAL-93440806/

Curious why you're doing this. Zero benefits, more money than fixing whatever could be wrong with your CC system.

If you're going non-CC, at least go with a Holley double pumper (since you have a T5). That would require either an adapter to fit your factory intake manifold (not recommended), or an intake change to one that accommodates a square bore mount. But, that makes more sense than spending money on a non-CC q-jet to replace a CC q-jet.

 

i had a feeling youd chime in (i read alot of swap threads before deciding to do the swap and saw you in almost every one). well, i am making this swap because after putting on a rebuilt cc carb, changing almost every sensor on the car, and tweaking everything it still doesnt run right and i dont feel like messing with computer controlled bs anymore. i know i will get worse gas mileage (this is debatable, as it doesnt run well now and i get poor mileage). this is not my dd so gas mileage is no concern. i dont want to change the intake as i want to keep this car original or atleast very easily convertible back to original so im going with a quadrajet. finally, its my car and i will do what i please with it and i feel like this will be a fun weekend project for me as ive never swapped a distributor and i like doing new things, so hopefully future comments will be supportive =)

 

There was nothing unsupportive in my previous post. I simply asked for information and proposed an alternative using assumptions based on what you had said so far.

There is nothing irreversible about what I suggested. You can keep all of the CC parts in place, or even pull them out intact and put them in a box in the attic. Ditto the intake manifold.

Since you're going non-CC, and you have a T5, then getting away from demand-based secondaries is a good idea. That's all I'm saying. Not being your DD reinforces this approach.

And, when you change the intake manifold, you get to remove and install the distributor as well...

 

sorry if i was a lil hostile there, not my intention =) i guess i also want to retain the stock air filter housing, but i suppose if this works out well i might be down for a new intake and carb in the future! im sure at some point ill have to take this old 305 out and re ring it and re seal it, so probably at that point ill do new heads and intake. and holley carb =)

 

I think the Qjet is a very good carb for you, that one looks ready to go.

 

I just have to ask why spend that on a new distributor? Why not pick up a used unit in good shape, put a new coil, cap, rotor on it, grab an advance spring/weight kit? Could save a lot of money that way.

 

that is a good point, but well i dunno i like putting shiny new parts on my car =) also, i like to buy gm or delco whenever possible, there were some msd and accel ones that were a lot cheaper, but i feel gm performance puts out some good stuff so i went with them.

 

True, the stock air cleaner won't fit over a 4150 Holley. However, it will fit on this: http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HLY-0-6210/

And that will fit on your stock intake manifold. Only issue is the divorced choke.

 

Now that is a good looking carb.

The car will run full-rich all the time because the ECM won't be getting the engine speed signal from the distributor, and will go into limp-home mode (the MCS won't cycle).
