Swap to carb combo! Need advice
Doing a tpi to carb swap and was deciding what intake to go with. Im thinking of getting the xr286hr comp cam with 190cc aluminum pro comp heads. I saw an old acticle on superchevy.com that used this combo with a professional product intake and make 405hp and 410 ft lbs at around 5300 rpms which i think isnt bad for a low budget build. My question is if an rpm air gap intake would really be a down grade on numbers if i used it with those heads and cam? And plus the professional product intake is huge and hood clearance would be a problem i just dont want to end up buying the biggest cowl hood for my car. So please help

Re: Swap to carb combo! Need advice
I have an 86 T/A and I installed an Edlebrock RPM Air-Gap with a Holley Street Avenger carb on my car and with the drop base air cleaner it clears the hood just fine. To me Professional Products seems to be a knock off of the Edlebrock.

Truth be told, any intake manifold that goes up against the Edelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap is likely to have quite the uphill battle. Tested time and time again, the impressive dual-plane intake has proven itself a powerful performer, offering not just impressive peak power but a veritable avalanche of mid-range torque.

With a RPM Air-Gap intake an AFR 190 heads on a stock bore/pistons/rods/crank L98 and its tons of fun.

The Professional Products crosswind is basically a direct copy of an air gap. With that being said if you can afford the few extra dollars buy an air gap at least for the fact that their one of the few things that are still made in this country.

If you are interested I can build you a complete new harness with exactly what you need, shouldnt cost much more than the TPI harness is worth, and will end up as clean/high quality as possible.

Yes you can. You need a AFPR with a return. Cut the psi down to around 6 and have the excess return to the tank. You will have to find a 12v source for the fuel pump relay.

Re: Swap to carb combo! Need advice
My combo is a stock L98 bottom end with heads, cam and carb. I would save for better heads, but that is just me. Get them shaved so the combustion chambers are down around 60cc and use a thin head gasket. This will get you close to 10.5:1 compression. That will open up better choices for a camshaft. If you want better midrange torque, you don't want a cam that is on a 110-114 LSA. You want to be down around a 108. Duration in the upper 280's (230@.050) and as much lift as you can find. You will surpass 405HP for the same money. If it is a daily driver, I would dial it back a little, but I put a lot of miles on mine and it has more cam than the one I described above. You'll need a converter with around 3600 stall speed and appropriate springs and pushrods for the heads. This is where buying better heads puts you ahead of the game. Make sure you price the heads with appropriate springs for the cam you want.

Re: Swap to carb combo! Need advice
i'm running a weiand intake (dual plane) with a edelbrock 600 cfm carb. on a L Code crate motor. runs great, i like these parts together.
however i'm going back to FI. Looking to add boost and spray at some point.
edelbrock makes a couple great intakes too. no reason to overspend on a street machine. if it was drag race only, get the most expensive stuff you can. but for a street car, dont go too deep in your pocket. you never know what will happen driving down the street.

i have all my original harness already pulled to the driver side, now i dnt no where to start lol i found green and white wire from the fuel pump relay i think i have to run it into a 12v. but now i dnt know how to separate the whole harness from the vehicle. do i have to cut the connectors from the ac compressor or the oil pressure sensor, etc? this is where i am stuck at lol
