Choke Problems, idle.

Okay so I just changed the oil, filter, air filter, and fuel filter in my 87 z28 305. And now every time I touch the throttle the choke kicks on and my idle shoots up way too high. My tach doesn't work so i cant say exactly how high but when i shift into drive my tires chirp. I drove for a half an hour like this and the choke will not shut off. I can manually push the choke off on the carb but once i touch the gas it goes right back on again. Any ideas?

Stock carb?

Is your choke light on? Does your choke light work?

Most likely the choke thermostat isn't heating up, either because it isn't getting voltage, or the thermostat is shot.

Re: Choke Problems, idle.

The choke thermostat also referred to as the choke coil is the black plastic thing with the plug on it. https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/i...mz5V9GFmNfN8Dg
Not the thing circled in the picture the round thing above it. Ours isn't the same as the one in the picture its just for reference.

Make sure the choke light is on with the key on and the engine off.
If it is thats good.
It should be off with the engine running.
If thats all good use a test light and check the electrical plug going to the choke for power.
If it has power soak all the choke and fast idle linkage (located under the choke) with wd-40.
If the problem is still there then buy this. http://www.ebay.com/itm/ELECTRIC-CHO...3af1ce&vxp=mtr

It also sounds like to me you may need to back off your fast idle just a hair. Its the small screw under the choke. Its a preset for the idle when the choke is on all the way. Should be when you first start the car. But if it slams shut every time you press the gas you could back it off for now to help save your trans.
