88 Iroc swap to Carb help.

Thanks to everyone in advance for any help.

Ok, so I bought a Camaro with a blown 350.(It was a 350) Thought I would just swap out the engine of another 350. There are some horrible wiring problems from the speed shop that put the first 350 into it. (I am assuming that a speedshop put it in.)

Long story short I want to remove the TPI and just go with a Carb. I have a Intake, Heads, Distributor, and a Holly 600 carb. So I think I am set it those places. I went ahead and bought a Fuel Pressure Regulator with a return and a gasket kit. What else am I going to need? If there is anything else I will need would you please post a link to a example of one. I just want to make sure I buy the right parts that I need. Thanks

This is the Regulator I ordered. Thanks

Welcome aboard thirdgen.org.

What transmission do you have?

Carb or TBI throttle and TV (if auto trans) cables would make things cleaner. And, you'll need a bracket to hold the cable housings, and a drop-base air cleaner.

The thermostat housing and upper radiator hose are different between carb and TPI.

What type of choke does the carb have?

If Iwas you I with keep the TPI. I loved my 87 305 TPI with a 5 speed.So easy to start no mater how cold it was. And it was ready to drive with out having to wait for it to warm up.

@five7kid
I have a 700R4. Hoses I can get. That shouldn't be a problem. The Intake I am going to use is a Edelbrock Performer, with a Holly 600 carb with electric choke. From looking around I think I need a Torque Converter Lockup kit. Any suggestions from anyone?

@melissadunagan
If I kept the TPI in this car I would set the thing on fire. I has major electrical problems with the TPI. I have tried and tried to get it to work right. It might need a whole new wiring harness to fix the problem. I tried to take it to a shop that deals specifically with automotive electrical and they wouldn't even touch the car because it doesn't have the original engine. I will kill it with fire before I ever have another car with TPI. Maybe a modern EFI drop in kit, but not TPI like it is now.

That's what I was going to say next. Check summitracing.com for kits. You can also rig one up, but the kits are a lot easier.

I tend toward making what you've got work. People are removing TPI systems from their cars all the time, so finding an intact TPI harness for a reasonable price isn't all that far fetched. Replacing the harness would probably be less work than converting to carb. You'll probably say, "I don't have to worry about emissions", but only TPI (or a later EFI system) is emissions legal, and you never know when that may become an issue.

I was looking at a painless kit for the lock up. I think I might go with that.

You don't want to know how long we have been trying to get this TPI to work. You wouldn't measure it in day's, weeks, or months. I have had Camaro Gurus out the A** try to tinker with it and no luck. I don't want to buy a harness and find out that not the problem. I want/need the car fixed. I am tiered of this money pit. I have replaced so much I am done. Not one person here could talk me out of it. When I origonally put that engine in there I should have kept it with the carb, but I lessened to another person tell me how great TPI is. Well it's not. It is a outdated faulty system. I would rather have a mechanical system that is easy to work on. I have 90% of what I need to get it switched to a carb now. I only need the lockup kit and a few small things now and I want to make sure I get the right stuff I need.

Re: 88 Iroc swap to Carb help.

The project is coming along. About to put my new heads on after I do a little cleaning up of the pushrods and what not.

Enjoy the pics!

I am keeping the old exhaust manifolds for now. Since I am not going to be running the smog pump I cut the the port off for the manifold. I am in the prosess of welding the holes now. I know it is a cheap way to go, but it will work until I get it running well enough to feel comfortable spending that much cash on a new Y-pipe and Headers.
