Car idling high and wont go down

I have a 1986 Iroc/Z28 Camaro with the stock carb in it that I recently purchased. The other day when taking my car to work when I started it would not idle down. Usually it idles around 800 rpm but instead it was idling around 2000 rpm and would not kick down. I had no choice but to drive it to work since its my daily driver. When I started it again after work it was alittle lower but not much, on the way to work and the way back I was not touching the gas and I was doing 40 mph. Then when I finally got home it would not shut off, even when I took the key out so you can see this is a problem. Any help would be great, thanks.

Is the "Choke" warning light on?

Sounds like the choke isn't opening for some reason or another. Either that, or the fast idle cam is stuck in the high position instead of dropping down as the choke opens. #1 reason for the choke not opening is lack of power to the choke thermostat - right behind that is a failed choke thermostat. For the fast idle cam sticking, gummed up does that (can also keep the choke from opening).

When I tried to shut the car off it would stay running for a few minutes but the motor would start to shake and the engine would sound like it was about to shut off but it wouldnt so I had to open the hood and mess with the throttle to get it to shut off.

Re: Car idling high and wont go down

WARNING !
You could damage your engine letting it "run-on or diesel" after shutting off the key!
Its best to leave it in drive and turn the key off to kill the engine.

Better check out that choke and carb linkage right quick!
