QJ choke pull off question

OK, so I have a QJ off a 1986 Cali Emissions truck 17085003. According to what I've found it's a 1986 automatic transmission truck. With the stock pulloff it would just hang for a second on my engine (1971 Pontiac 350 otherwise stock, manual transmission.) I'm thinking that the choke pull off is way too slow. It hangs for a good 2-3 seconds, then wakes up. I've messed with the air door tension, and didn't really get anywhere with it. I've tried converting to use an aquarium valve like I've read on the internet, but now it seems to open way too fast. I'm probably going to buy a new choke pull off, would going to one from say an 85 L69 Camaro help at all?

Re: QJ choke pull off question
Most of the parts store stuff is pretty "generic" these days. All of the factory fiddling with pull-off rates for different applications kinda goes out the window and they build them all to the same spec. Sometimes they sneak one through that, just by luck, happens to open faster than some of the others.

Re: QJ choke pull off question
The parts store came back with over 40 bucks for a pull off after a special order fee and shipping. I'm going to try another place or two, but I may end up ordering one from Cliff Ruggles or similar. Any thoughts on picking up some hangers or secondary metering rods while I'm at it? I have "EK" rods and a "C" hanger.

Re: QJ choke pull off question
So, another question. I have another parts carb here (pulloff is no good and is the wrong type) I have a "P" hanger and a set of BG rods vs the "C" hanger and some EK rods. It appears that the fuel would come on way later with the P hanger, but what about the rods? I mean, would an engine that was making 250 gross HP even hit the 70% opening of the air valves on a QJ?

I.D. Code 0 deg. 20 deg. 40 deg. 60 deg. 70 deg. 80 deg. 90 deg. Tip length GM Part #

Re: QJ choke pull off question
Figured out how to fix the pull off issue. It's an in progress, but I took a .177 pellet and drilled a hole in it. Bit of a nuisance to get out again, but they're cheap, disposable and easy to replicate. She's acting like she's still got a bit of a funky spot but not bad overall. I may need to go a hair smaller, but I'm using a #76-77 tip cleaner to make the hole, which means the next step would be buying a pin vise and a #80 drill and going from there. The power comes on smooth and is very aggressive now though, so it may get left.

Re: QJ choke pull off question
The size of the hole you need to correctly slow the opening of that pull-off is going to be in the range of .020"

What rods did the carb come with originally? DPs I'm guessing?

Almost any QJet a good starting point for secondary rods is a set of factory L69 305 HO rods (DR). Your EKs would be about the closest you've got to DRs for right now.

I usually run a hanger around a G for starters, but in reality, you almost CAN'T go too rich on initial air valve opening with a QJet.

Re: QJ choke pull off question
#77 should be in the 18 thousandth range. I am thinking about getting a bit set eventually, but this seems to come on smoothly.

The EKs are actually OEM to this QJ. The DRs look to be about 50 thou smaller diameter which should be quite a bit more area I suspect. The BGs make me somewhat curious they seem to be made to dump in fuel at higher air valve openings, but they're almost the same as the EKs in the low/mid opening.
