big problems?

I have a 91 Rs that was originally set up for MFI, the motor I put in it ( got the car with no motor ) Is carberated. I already found out my distributor wont work because its hei? its from an 80 monte. So what do I need to do here, I had a fuel pump regulator and was told to return it it wont help. What do I need to do now ? The block is out of a 76 camaro its a 350 . But its set up is carberated, do i need to change the intake and everything?? I feel like its going to be a huge p.i.t.a.... any wisdom?

Re: big problems?

you need a return style adjustable regulator, run the output directly to the carb(get rid of mechanical pump) you need to wire the tank pump to come on with a switch and or the ops.

the monte dist have a vacuum port or just a bunch of wires? if its got a vacuum port it will be fine. if not you could likely trade it for one that does at a JY

as far as the intake/carb if you dont want to put something better looking on there, you can just plug any emissions holes or vacuum ports.

the 700r4 trans is the biggest pain. you have to fix the lockup so it will work, do a search on here or google there are a few different ways. you need the correct cable and bracket placement or it will mess up your trans.

Re: big problems?

The distributor has a bunch of wires I figured I'd be changing that, is there any way to make the multi port fuel injection work with my carb? I'm really not sure what to do other than drop the tank and put in a fuel cell but I really don't want to hack the car its so nice and clean.

Re: big problems?

Lots of swaps on here detailing exactly what you need. You need an HEI distributor with Vacuum advance canister. You will need to splice into your existing wiring to power the distributor and get the "ignition on" working. For the fuel pump, the in tank is the easiest to use. That, coupled with a Mallory 4308 (adjustable, return-type regulator) will fir your needs. You will need to hook up everything needed for the computer (Assuming it is still in the car) to signal the fuel pump to turn on. If the computer has already been ripped out, then you will need to wire up the pump with a switch and relay.

What intake and carb on the 350?

Should read Mallory 4309 or 4307 (I run a 4307 which is the Marine version, either works). Set pressure down to 5.5psi or so.

Re: big problems?

the dist you can get a 70's chevy (has to be chevy v8 with the vacuum can)one from the junk yard for pretty cheap and get a new cap and rotor if you want cheap. if you want new and nice looking you can get a all in one billet aluminum on from summit or something. i got a mallory 85 because its got a number of better features and adjustments.

the mpfi would be to hard to get tuned if it did adapt mechanically. carb conversion is pretty simple. there is likely a fuel relay under hood that you need to wire to come on without the computer. dont need to do anything to the stock tank or even take it down. there is a dark green/white trace wire going to the relay, cut the side to the computer and wire a switch off the key to put 12v on the side that goes to the relay.
