Ecu removal
Ok everyone I recently bought an 84 berlinetta with the 305. Shame about that but regardless I was wondering what the ecu actually controls and what I would have to change in order to chunk that pos into tha river. Seriously if I wanted KITT to control my car I would've bought a new camaro. I want COMPLETE control of everything. Any help is appreciated. And yes I already have a 383 on the engine stand so no need to go into the swap a 350 in it debate. But will be awhile before I can finish the engine and this car runs like @$&#!!! Idles at 530 drops to 450 try to die I have to keep hitting gas. Most times refuses to even start. On the rare and very unsatisfying occasion that it does start when I push the gas half or wot it bogs down to a stall or if I get revved up in first then it hesitates to shift. And by hesitation I mean serious hesitation where I have to let off the gas for it to shift. Thought about some c4 of some form of 50 caliber weapon would help. I won't even go into the lights acting like they're possessed by the electro gremlin god of death.

Re: Ecu removal
You can pull out the ECM / ECM Harness completely and still have all the gauges and accessories working properly. The most significant thing you will loose by removing the ECM is the automatic tranny lock-up feature and there are aftermarket kits you can buy to restore that function.
Once the ECM is gone, you'll need a vacuum advanced disributor and non-CC Carb to complete the 'conversion'.

Re: Ecu removal
Thanks everyone. Yea this 84 is dent/rust free. Interior is amazing for the age. Couldn't pass it up for a grand. Brand new tires on,lol, Pontiac rims.
Back looks like it never saw an occupant. I'm impressed how it was kept so clean. I'm restoring it which is why I want to keep the dash original. But I won't subject anyone to a 305. Besides my boat need's a good anchor.

Re: Ecu removal
The humorous thing here is I have the stuff. Just haven't done it yet. Been fighting the electrical gremlin army lol. I'm going to have to replace tha light module unfortunately. Just afraid to see how much that is. But yea I was gonna do the tuneup but this Texas weather is retarded. Pray for rain he answers with a vengeance lol

Never owned a berlinetta before but have owned an 86 iroc which is in the garage as well. And a 91 police interceptor with 350 and 5 speed. Now THAT was a beast. Miss that car. But looking at this berlinetta as opposed to the others I have never seen such night and day differences. Wish the made aftermarket modules and so forth. Anyone find one let me know. Thanks for the info on it everyone. I'm gonna do quite a bit on it today like 1 removing that T Rex of a catalytic converter lol.

Re: Ecu removal
Im just about finished doing a TPI to Carb swap and i left my ECU in place and went about just hooking all my sensors back up and for the most part haven't had any problems just abandoned it in place but i do have a 5-speed so i didn't have to deal with the tranny.

Re: Ecu removal
More than likely your radiator fan is still being signaled/controlled by temp sensor and ecu (input/output signal). That is ,unless you installed a separate fan controller. I have converted my 84 Z-28 HO to new distributor/non cc quadrajet carb/all smog emissions removed.ECU only controls radiator fan cooling.Check engine light is on....but I use it as an indicator ECU has power to it.Probably could change nomenclature from check engine to ECU power on. LOL.
