83 Z28 Carb Issue
83 Z28 Carb Issue
Ok, so I've got a carbureted 305 in my 83 Z28 for the time being until my 350 gets built but I'm having an issue with the carb. I can't push the gas peddle even 3/4 of the way before it cuts out and acts like it's starving for fuel. I've checked and it's getting plenty of fuel and I've adjusted the floats multiple times and it still acts up. Any suggestions on what might cause this issue? Thanks

Could Be The Fuel Filter Check Valve Not Opening Fully.

Re: 83 Z28 Carb Issue
The whole fuel line system and fuel filter is all gone through and new. And my 305 used to be TBI but my car that I dropped the motor in has been converted to carb due to the car having CFI wiring. It has a 4 bbl Edelbrock 650cfm on it right now

If it acts like it's starving for fuel, then it's most likely ... starving for fuel. Which means, no matter what about "gone through", it's not getting enough fuel, which means the fuel system isn't delivering it.
First thing to do is to verify that in fact, it does/doesn't have enough fuel, WHILE DRIVING. What it does sitting in the driveway idling is irrelevant.
Drive the car until it screws up. WHILE IT'S IN THE ACT OF SCREWING UP, turn the key to Off (NOT Lock!!!!) and take it out of gear at the same time to let the engine instantly come to a complete stop, and pull off to the side of the road safely. DO NOT let it idle while doing this, as the fuel system may be able to replenish the bowls and thereby destroy the evidence of the situation it was in WHILE IN THE ACT OF SCREWING UP: you want to preserve the contents of the carb at that exact instant. Pop the top of the carb off and PHYSICALLY LOOK in the bowls and see how much fuel is in them. If they are not FULL, you have a fuel delivery problem, which by definition means your fuel system is not working properly.
Might be worthwhile to tell us EXACTLY how your fuel system is configured; most specifically, are you using a block-mounted mechanical pump, and did you remove the electric pump from the tank.

Do you still have the original fuel injection distributor in it or did you put a mechanical advance with a vacuum advance on it. The fuel injection distributor has no advance ability without the computer.

+1 Try advancing distributor with initial timng. You should be able to get it to run half way decent and eliminate your issue if it is the distributor timing (lack of it).Had same issue with my 84 till I put in new distributor

I'm going to assume you did all the things mentioned in this thread already, before posting.

Re: 83 Z28 Carb Issue
Are you trying to pull fuel through a non-operating in-tank electric fuel pump with an engine-mounted mechanical fuel pump?
