Keep cc carb or swap to edlebrock
I have an 86 trans am with the original lg4. Since its been pretty much unmolested its entire life i was thinking of keeping it almost completely factory, it only has 102,000 miles on it. Problem is the car idles like crap. It sounds like it has a hellish cam in it and will pop in the exhaust when idling. Once your give it gas though it runs like a champ and is even drivable. Im tossed whether to pull the carb and try to find someone local who can rebuild and set it up for me or i have an edlebrock 1406 and a vaccuum advance distributor laying around which are both new. I dont want to lose too much originality of the car but finding people to work on cc carbs is getting harder and harder.

I am assuming that you already correctly determined that this actually a CC carb problem and not something else.

Re: Keep cc carb or swap to edlebrock
Even if you decide to swap carbs, I would suggest that it NOT be an Edelbrock.
Look at this one instead. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/hly-0-6210 will run better, get better gas mileage, and above all, FIT THE CAR, which an Edelbrock doesn't. You can get them used, refurbed, and so forth, as well.

1405 is manual choke. 1406 has electric choke. Both are 600 cfm...

The electric choke models are most always calibrated for a leaner air/ fuel mixture compared to the manual choke models.

Re: Keep cc carb or swap to edlebrock
This is correct. Don't worry about how it comes pre-calibrated because the right thing to do is calibrate it for your engine. My Edebrock 1406 ran decent out of the box but ran great when I tuned it properly.
However, I recommend you keep your CC carb and fix it right. I am happy with my Edelbrock, but if it still had the original CC carb I would leave it alone I think (previous owner removed it).

Re: Keep cc carb or swap to edlebrock
I called cliff, great guy. He said he really didnt want to mess with mine being that its computer controlled. He was able to tell me exactly whats wrong with it based off what i told him it was doing and he suggested giving TTA performance a call since theyve done the cc quadrajets in the past. So im going to call them today and see how much it will cost to have mine done
Re: Keep cc carb or swap to edlebrock
Are you sure it’s not a vacuum leak? The CCC Quadrajet rebuild kits are at NAPA. They’re pretty easy to rebuild, probably $50 too. I rebuilt mine a couple years ago. Ran fine until it flooded. The needle was upside down, so I flipped it over and it ran fine after that.
