CarburetorsCarb discussion and questions. Upgrading your Third Gen's carburetor, swapping TBI to carburetor, or TPI to carburetor? Need LG4 or H.O. info? Post it here.
I have a 1986 Z28 with a 305. I am swapping my TPI to carburetor. Will I need new distributor? If already posted lead me in right direction. Newbie here
I truly respect your opinion. I just like the simple stuff that I know a lot more about for now. My wife just wants to drive it this summer. Thinking of late model swap in the future. Who knows???

My start up injector is trash. Can’t find one and some other idle issues.
Some of the early '86 proms were buggy anyways, do a search on them.. MIne had one.. I updated to the '89 tune that doesn't require that 9th injector, it raised my shift points if your auto, lowered the fan temps, disabled vats, ect. ect.. My '86 runs like it should after that simple swap, and unplug of that 9th injector.. Tuned Performance should be able to set you up with the right chip and tune.. much easier than a complete swap in my opinion.. plug and play.. and yes you need to change the distributor to swap to carb..
edit: your going to need to find away to lock up the trans without the ecu as well.. control radiator fan, fuel pressure to high from in tank pump for carb... ect. ect.. ect..

If fixing TPI is too difficult I would stay away from hard things like engine swaps but as far as HEI this one is cheap and has enough reviews that I would consider it
New intake
intake bolt kit
new Holley 600cfm carburetor
carburetor stud kit
air cleaner
700r4 bracket for cables that attaches to carb
fuel regulator w/ bypass
new fuel return line
hei vacuum mechanical distributor
transmission lock up kit
fuel filter
also got 2 electric fans and wiring kit
aluminum radiator
all new suspension bushings
new struts and shocks
new plugs and wires
Mid-length headers
new valve covers and gaskets
new timing chain and front main seal
new belts
new exhaust and muffler.
I’m sure I forgetting a few things.
plan to build a 383 this summer and a lot of these parts will also work in that application
thanks for the reply’s

I also got rid of the TPI and went carb/HEI. So much simpler IMO. I know there are people who are great with them but i'm not one. Once start changing cams, cubic inches, power adder, etc, the TPI becomes difficult to tune to me. But i am glad there are still people who know how to work, service and upgrade them. I'd hit up TunedPerformance in a heartbeat for TPI stuff. Sounds like you got a lot of work ahead of you, LOL. Have fun wrenching and post some progress pics
nice camaro, best of luck whatever you choose...carbed small blocks suck gas like theres an unlimited amount of dead dinosaur juice available,i miss my 5.7 TPI iroc.....reasonably quick and sipped fuel in comparison
