Best carb cleaner/solution and process???

I have a Holley 750 Street HP carb that I have disassembled for a rebuild.
Also it has the polished zinc coating just for reference.

What cleaner/solution do you guys like to use?
Gunk Parts Cleaner? the gallon with basket or Berrymans?
Gumout carb/choke cleaner? ect...

I have heard of people using Purple Power, Pine Sol, Simple Green and other products maybe even a mixture.
What do you guys like to use and do you soak it over night?
What works best for you?

What about using a crockpot with cleaner? Ultrasonic Cleaners? Just a thought

Berrymans is extremely caustic and dissolves anything rubber. I think it also eats aluminum. I would avoid it. Water based stuff like simple green works but not great. My favorite is lacquer thinner. I bought a 5 gallon jug of it at lowes, poured it into 5 gallon bucket with screw on lid, and that is my parts cleaner. Dissolves any gum but wont harm metal or plastic. A little harsh on rubber though. Dries fast.

Re: Best carb cleaner/solution and process???

The carb is not dirty/greasy just some dried up fuel. I should have been running/driving it more often.

I just want to get all the varnish / dried fuel out of all the ports.

carb dip, such as Gunk CC3K

Not as good as the stuff you could get several years ago but will work.

Re: Best carb cleaner/solution and process???

I thought about picking up a clean empty gallon paint can with lid and some lacquer thinner. Or the gallon of Berrymans with the basket. BERRYMAN CHEM-DIP CARBURETOR PARTS CLEANER

That way I could soak the bowls, metering plates and valve body. Plus all the other metal parts (screws/jets). The base plate is clean, so I will used a can of carb cleaner and compressed air and not soak it.

The needles under the squirters where stuck. I had to soak them in wd40 and wiggle them with a pick to get them out. They are clean, but was just stuck. I couldn't get them loose with air. So I know it would be good to soak everything.

Re: Best carb cleaner/solution and process???

the added benefit to the carb did is that it has a non-evaporating liquid that is lighter than the solvent included.

this floats on top. keeps the solvent from evaporating or filling your shop with that lacquer thinner smell every time you open the can.

of course the carb dip is now more environmentally friendly and won't eat stuff like lacquer thinner, but it still works for me.

and when you're done you just re-lid it and stick it somewhere for the next time.

Yeah it does come with a basket for the smaller parts too.
I will give it a shot.

I see you are in Lexington SC. I go through that way (Columbia) when we go to Charleston and Myrtle Beach.

Re: Best carb cleaner/solution and process???

Simple green and vinegar solutions in a heated ultrasonic cleaner here. First bath is around 2 hours of cleaning at 160°F in Simple Green and water mixture. 2nd bath is 30 minutes to 1 hour in a mild solution of vinegar (the kind you clean with not eat) and water. Then it gets a fresh water dip and blow it all out with compressed air. On carbs that have more corrosion than usual or that I am going to zinc plate, I use a very mild solution of muratic acid in water in a bucket and dip them with the plating wire already attached until they are clean. Carb then goes directly in the plating bath bucket while still soaking wet. The muratic acid will eat the coating after a short time as well as any corrosion leaving a nice surface to plate.

This was an Edelbrock 1405 in the bath after 2 hours and what was left after the waste solution was drained. It as a mixture of dirt, carbon, varnished gasoline, oil and corrosion. The Edelbrock also had alot of glittery metallic debris in it that appears to have been left in the casting after they machined it. After the first soaking, it gets a second soaking.

Quadrajet bodies had only been through the simple green bath. The vinegar removes almost all the corrosion... Notice the idle down tubes have been removed from them prior to the baths.

Re: Best carb cleaner/solution and process???

My free Edelbrock 1405 is in the Vinegar bath tonight. Picked up $140 worth of parts to rebuild and recalibrate it. Will test it on a running small block after.

The mixture I use is 1/2 gallon white vinegar and 3 gallons of water. Even after the two rounds of simple green soaking the vinegar bath always looks dirty. The vinegar bath removes any and all corrosion on the unit. This is after a 30 minute vinegar bath at 160°F using the ultrasonic cleaner. Solution was absolutely clear before the carb that also appeared clean went into it.

I am literally laying on the couch watching a movie while this thing works. No toxic fumes or chemicals.

Looks like a good setup.
I hope to get a chance at work on the carb this weekend. After the cleaning, the Holley doesn't take long to reassemble.
So hopefully I will have a running car soon. Then I have some new valvecovers and SS LT headers to put on.

That looks really good.

Here is the Holley. I soaked the parts for about an hour in the Berryman Chem-Dip.
