Re: 800 double pumper...on 305

If you tune it right, it will work. Not ideal, but it will work. Don't expect to make power

Re: 800 double pumper...on 305

Can it be tuned to run on the 305? ? Yes. Will is make as much power as a 600cfm carb? No.
Will it suck fuel like there's no tomorrow? Absolutely...

Carry a fire extinguisher in your car when you take it for a test drive. You never know...……...

Lol ya good idea my grandfather back in 72 or 73 actually ran a holley 1,200 cfm three barrel in a 327 Chevy in his chevelle after he blew up his 427 I can’t imagine a carburetor that big on a 327

Re: 800 double pumper...on 305

Carburetors need pressure drop to work. Putting an oversized carburetor on is just going to mess up fuel delivery.

Years ago I helped a coworker and friend setup dual carter 450s (I believe that was the CFM rating, they were smaller than the Edelbrock 500s) which were basically the same as an Edelbrock 500/600 with thicker sleeved venturi boosters on a weiand street tunnel ram (longer divided, smaller ports) on a 305 with 601 heads and a Comp 270s cam. Was in a 39 Chevy sedan with a 700r4 and 4.10s. Later that engine was replaced with a healthy 406 and the carbs replaced by dual GM 350 TBI units. 700r4 was replaced by a 95 4L60E. Those dual 450s worked very nicely on that hot little 305 as they are hard to over carb with the counterweighted secondary air valves, had to really spin that little 305 to get all 8 barrels open.

800cfm would be fine at higher rpm and WOT especially if it has annular boosters, its the part-throttle and transients that will be hell to tune. Also one should not expect to be able to simply floor the throttle south of 3,500-4,000 rpm without a massive bog.

Years ago I played with a Predator street carb on a mostly stock 305. It ran very well, better than I expected actually with its variable venturi. In the end a quadrajet got a little better mileage and had better off-idle performance but I would take a predator over a holley or edelbrock. Like the Q-Jet the Predator only flows the CFM that is needed and is almost impossible to overcarb an engine with.
