I’m running into some issues identifying the unconnected choke heater wire and connecting it back to the carb.
This is a 1984 2.8l v6 Camaro with the original Rochester carb. I got the car roughly a month ago knowing one of the issues with it was the choke not working properly. When I went to get started on troubleshooting it, I noticed that there wasn’t any wire connected to the choke side like I’ve read there should be.
If I understand this right, the wire to the choke heater is supposed to be blue, and I found one wire that looks like it could be the right one originating on the drivers side, but it appears to have been spliced into an extension wire that was never actually plugged into the choke.
So far I’ve replaced a blown 20A fuse for the choke heater and checked for any mechanical issues (choke sticking or butterfly assemblies being stuck.) So far it all seems ok; I’m just missing the connection. I did see a small metal lip on the choke side that might be where the wire goes, but I’m not sure.
Is the blue to red wire the correct one, and is this little metal lip on the choke side where it’s supposed to go?
For reference, I am able to start the car and drive it in its current condition (though the idle is fairly high). The choke light does come on with the other dash lights when the key is turned once before starting it. It does not come on again when the car is running.
Yes, the wire is blue. There should be no voltage between the wire and ground with the key on and engine NOT running.
With the engine running, there should be full battery voltage present...
Ok, so just to clarify where I’m at currently;
. The choke light comes on normally when turning the key once before starting. It turns off once the engine is running
. The choke heater fuse is brand new and intact
. The alternator is likely less than 5 years old and seems to be working normally
Per the last reply, I used a multimeter to test for voltage in the wire. With the key turned once and engine off, the wire had 0 volts
With the engine on, the wire still had 0 volts.
I also tried checking the resistance from the end of the blue wire to the end of the spliced red wire and got 0.1-0.2 ohms.
Out of curiosity, I also tested the choke relay for resistance and got 27 ohms. I’m not sure if this is an ok value.
Based on this, would it be more likely that the blue wire is disconnected somewhere or could it just be the relay?
