quadrajet question....
2 ways to change the IDLE mixture. That is one way. However, if yours still has the caps on it I'd recommend not touching them until you have first tired to play with the IAB (idle air bypass) valve. It ALSO changes the air fuel mix at idle but is the place you should start first, IMHO. It is right on top of the carb in front of the choke airhorn between the primaries. It is under an anti-tamper plate that is held on by 2 small rivets on the sides. Drill the rivets and remove the plate. You will see a large regular-head screw under there. That is actually the IAB valve. Turn it clockwise to richen the idle mix, CCW to lean it. A good starting point is about 3 turns up (CCW) from where it bottoms out (bottom it LIGHTLY- don't crank it down hard- the threads are very fine).
Other than minor adjustemnts to the IAB there is little reason to ever adjust the idle mixture screws themselves unless you have made changes to the engine like headers, intake, cam, etc. Hot rod mods.
