Is the choke the only thing that works when q-jet is cold?

My car starts up after like the 3rd try in the mornings. Then it runs OK, but will buck and stall when I put it in gear. Eventually, I can get it going and it runs like **** for the first mile down the road. I dread comming to the first intersection because the light is always red. But after I get a ways down the road and the temp guage starts reading a little warmer, it runs fine. When it gets to 160C, it runs great.

My choke opens normally, but I think I need to turn the houseing a little so that it opens a little slower (see previous thread). It seems to be a problem only when the car first starts up, and it's only getting worse now that it is getting colder outside. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you need to re-adjust the choke for colder weather. Do you let the car idle for 2-5 minutes when cold, this is to ensure the car is fully warm. You should never (at least in my opinion) drive a carb (or FI) car as soon as you turn it on after it sat overnight, you should let it warm up first. As for the starting after 3 tries, how's your fuel pump? Sounds like you have a loss in pressure (maybe an old gas tank cap, or your fuel reservoir is low), thus hard starts when "cold". Basically the fuel is returning to the tank (or before the pump), then you pump has to re-pump the fuel back to the carb. JMO

I think my intake line has a slight leak, so that would explain the hard starts. They really aren't that hard either. Similar to every other carbed car I've owned actually.

I know I should wait longer before I drive. By you suggesting it too, I am going to really try hard to start doing that... especially during the colder months.

Today, I am going to try and rotate the choke housing so it has a little more tension on the spring initially. I think it is opening too quickly and that is why I don't have major problems until I get a mile down the road. I am also going to check all my plug wires just to cover all the bases...

So I rotated the e-choke about 1/8 turn and it seems to open slower... only it still runs rough when it is warming up.

Side note: I tried to pull a plug wire at the cap to see if the idle got worse (then it all ready is) and there wasn't much change no matter which wire I pulled. My plugs look OK too. I think the problem must lie in the q-jet...
