vacuum advance distributer with the computer controlled quadrajet?
vacuum advance distributer with the computer controlled quadrajet?
I just finished installing my new crate 350 and am using the quadrajet from the 305. It is computer controlled but the distributer on the 350 is vacuum advance. I hooked up a vacuum from the carb and it seems to work just fine except it idles like hell. It idles fine but very rough. Also, it wonlt idle on its own when I first start if for about 3 seconds and then it is fine. It has consistantly behaved in this manner since the engine went in. Any advise?

Even better would be to pull the distributor that came with the crate engine and install the computer controlled distributor from the 305. Then everything will work and you won't have to buy an expensive carb.

The reason why your car doesn't idle right is because the primary rods are held in the "up" (rich) mode all the time. This is because you disconnected the distributor, hence the computer cannot control the carb (mixture control solenoid) or dist., so it ramains in constant open loop. Either put in the computer controlled distributor, as five7kid mentioned, or get a non-computer controlled carb, like Jester mentioned. But you can't "mix-and-match" non-comp. parts and comp. parts

The idle circuit in an unconnected computer-controlled Q-Jet can be adjusted, but outside of that it'll run too rich. I'm a big believer in junkyards. Try to find a good Q-Jet and then scrounge around to collect rods, jets, hangers, etc. from other Q-Jets. Clean it up and start experimenting with your metering rod collection until you get a good combination. Stuff your pockets with HEI springs and weights while you're there, too! ;-)
