Edelbrock carb gurus, please help me tune my carb

I installed an Edelbrock 1400 600cfm carb this weekend and am having trouble with it. Under 1/3 to WOT it runs great but stumbles on the bottom end. The idle is horrible. I thought it was the accelerator pump so I moved it to the lowest hole on the adjustment. That helped with the initial hesitation but it is still stumbling right at the bottom end of the throttle. Is there a procedure that you guys follow to tune them. I tried doing what the instructions suggested on mixture tuning of the idle using the two screws on the front. Can you experts please help me?

Thanks

Well, do you a have HEI vacuum advance distributor?
The reason I ask this, is because it affected how I tuned my carb and how it responds.
I mistakingly placed the vacuum advance on the manifold vacuum connection. It had decent vacuum for the most part ,but the distributor would almost never advance...
On a whim, I decided to move the connection and when I did, I realized the error of my earlier ways...had to readjust the distributor.
Now when I mash the gas, instead of the advance going from 6' to 10', it goes from 6' to 28', and the carb responds ALOT better!
Hope this has helped a bit. By the way, both of my a/f needles are about 3 3/4 turns to 4 turns out from all the way in.
I'm using a Torker II intake and Accel HEI Supercoil for most of my 305 setup.(and my vacuum went from 8-10" before properly tuning to 18+" SOLID VACUUM! ! !)

If you don't have the rods and jets kit for this carb I'd highly recommend you get them. I'd try richening up the mixture. Go a step or two higher on the primary jets and rods. Use the Edlebrock book to know which setup the carb came with and which rods and jets would be used to richen the mixture.

On my 383 carb setup, I went up two jet and rod sizes on the primary side an one set up on the secondary side. I also moved the pump to a richer squirter setting and I remove the air cleaner at the track for racing.

Just my thoughts...........

Duffster, is the manifold vacuum connection considered the "full time vaccum port", where the correct place (where you moved the connection to) is the "ported vacuum port"?

Just trying to get this straight.. I want to make sure I have mine hooked up the right way..

if you connect your HEI to the port on the left from the front, you should be straight!
