Keep the TBI or make it a Carb.........

whats going to give me the best performace for my RS with a 305 TBI. I am going to rebuild the motor soon(putting a 350 instead) and dont know if i should modify the TBI, make it a Carb or switch it to a TPI. What has the best horsepower and still good milage. Also how do you switch the TBI to a Carb with the computer and all the wiring. What will i have to change and what would if cost. Any advice would help.

91 RS
not one damn mod
(let me know if you think of some really cheap ones I could do)

As surprising as this sounds, i would not advocate switching to carb without really looking at what you want to do. If you get into the TBI, you can make it work. Larger injectors and TBs are readily available, and burning your own proms for fine tuning is also not a big deal.
Of course if you're really trying for big power, or are stuck on a super-low budget then carb is your way cheapest option. But then you give up all future emmisions legality, and some marginal amount of gas mileage. And if you don't know anything about carbs to begin with, there's teh whole learning curve there too.

Well I trying to build something well over 300 hp at least enought to beat a fast mustang and a new camaro, both lots of mods .(a few of my rivals back home). I have rebuilt plenty of engines and have a decent understanding of the carb. But dont know how to switch a TBI to a Carb or to a TPI. I dont reallt know how to find the right combo of carb, cam, heads and all the other good stuff. The numbers is really what i dont know. So I am just out looking for some info to get me in the right direction of what I should build.

When doing your build up don't mismatch your parts togther. This is the quickest why to not get what you want.Make sure your cam and heads work good togther in the same RPM range.Don't put a big monster cam with over.500 of lift and stock heads on it and excepct it to work good. The planning and picking of your parts is the most impotant part of the build up.

well if you are looking to beat a wormed over Mustang or 4th gen Z28 then yo will need to put yourself into the mid to low 13 sec area. Here is a budget minded build up that will put you there build yourself a flat top 350 with a set of Vortec heads, Performer RPM intake, Summit 214/224 cam, and a Holley 650. Of course you will have to get headers and all the rest of the exhaust done but that goes without saying. You should be able to get this motor complete for around $1,000 and be able to run with your high dollar fuel injected rivals.
