Swapped edelbrock carbs, runs better but has same problems.

I took my 1406 carb and swapped it for a new one at Advance Auto and slapped that puppy on my car. Car has a good throttle response again, but it still does that bogging when throttling under load. Could having the timing off cause this problem?
It is driving me crazy.
What about fouled plugs, could that be the problem?

Those fouled plugs tell me that something's causing an overrich condition. I'd check the fuel pump pressure first. The fuel pump return line could be blocked and causing overpressure as well. Either way, it's forcing extra fuel into your carb.

If the fuel pump isn't the problem, I'd check my ignition for a weak spark. Are ALL of your plugs fouled? A weak ignition will cause those problems you had mentioned.

That's too much intake and carb for a stock cam/head setup, if that's what you are running... You can carb tune around your setup but it will make other operability problems elsewhere...

Get an Edelbrock Tuneing Kit ($35-45?) for your carb and follow the instx. Have fun!

I haven't checked the plugs yet, I phrased that question wrong. I should have asked "will fouled plug cause the problems I am having?"

Yes, I am still running the stock cam and heads.

I'll probably just change the plugs for the hell of it, can't remember when I did them last, maybe about 5K miles ago.

Thanks Guys.

You will need MAJOR tuning for your combo! I have heard other guys w/similar combo on this board (I think?) that had to do some serious carb tuning. You'd almost be better off getting the Edelbrock Performer cam 2102 (204/214 with .420"/.442"lift), or summit $79 imitation. You'd will add SUBSTANTIAL torque and quite a bit of rpm potential and not effect driveability/mileage for less than 100 buck with gaskets and all. I am not saying this to criticize, just to make your combo a little more matched...

might sound silly...but try swapping your vacuum ports around w/your distributor.
and check your timing advance again after swapping...
let us know...(ps...it's a free fix )

I believe the timing was off a little.
I am going to verify that tomorrow at the shop when I go to get my car inspected.
Thanks for all the replies.
I would do the cam swap, but since this is my only car, I don't want to have it out of commission for too long.
How long does it take to do a cam swap anyways?

First cam swap can take you all day (8-10 hours) but you gotta have a couple of special tools to start, like harmonic balancer puller and possibly power steering pump pulley puller and gear puller for lower cam chain drive gear.

If it is your first time, get someone with experience/tools to help you. It's not hard at all and you can learn a lot about the healthof your engine while inside it. Cost about $100 bucks with cam and all gaskets. Add another $30 or so for tools to buy/keep. And a pizza and soda (not beer!) for the buddy who helps you.
