Carburator adjusting

My father-in-law has a 1986 chevy c-10, which has the same motor as my 1986 camaro. (305) The only difference is that his is carburated.

So the problem is that the thing idles very roughly. We did a tuneup (cap, plugs, rotor, wires) without results. My hunch is that its the carburator. I dont know anything about carb's other than that they can be adjusted. So how is it done? Can someone perhaps direct me to a good tech article or (even better) give some help online?

I figured you all would know a thing-or-two about doing this since its the same motor as many camaros. Thanks in advance!

Joe

Vacuum leaks! if not, then it's running lean or too rich.

A carb on an 86 will have all of adjustment screws sealed (for emissions). So there isn't much you can do except to run carb cleaner in the gas or rebuild it. Depending on what type of carb some of them had caps that could be punctured and removed to allow adjustment if you know where they are. I would check for vacuum leaks first and try some carb cleaner.

Have u checked your spark plugs? Also if u can adjust your mixture screws do so. If they are sealed u can still get around that. Remember turning the mixture screws clockwise leans the mixture and turning it counterclockwise richens the mixture. Also, is there black smoke coming out of the tailpipe(s)?Black smoke would mean a rich mixture which means you would have to lean it out.
