I am at wits end with this. I've had the car up and running for about a 1.5 yrs. now and just got a major problem. I was driving down the highway and all the sudden my car starts popping like mad. At first I though I threw something or blew out a header gasket, but I didn't. I checked the plugs and no metallic flakes on them. I tried retarding the timing but it didn't help. I think it is a carb problem. I gave it a vacuum leak to see what it would do. The idle would go up and no popping. Does this mean I am running way too rich? Why would this happen all of the sudden? Could it be a bad power valve? Thanks for the help.

I had this problem on an old car of mine and it turned out to be an ignition problem causing cross-firing. It could be a lot of things, rule out the easy stuff first.
