Help!! Poor Fit On Brand New Convertible Top!!!

Hi, I am new to this site, and I think it is great that there is a convertible forum here. I own a 1992 firebird convertible, which I have been pretty happy with, but I was never happy with the tan top. So, after 2 years of ownership, I finally decided to go for the black top that I wanted. I had the new top installed today, and I was very excited to go pick up what I thought was going to my new and improved black top bird. I was very disappointed with what I saw. Bottom line, POOR FITTING TOP!!!!! It has quite a few pretty bad wrinkles in it, and I think it looks terrible. The installer said not to worry because the top will shrink in a few days and the wrinkles will go away. I have some serious doubts about this. I think I might be a victim of a poor installation job, or possibly a poorly cut top??? The brand of top is the EZ On replacement top. Can anybody out there give me any advice about this problem?? Is it possible to re install the top to get it right? Is it possible the wrinkles will go away as the top shrinks? Should I have gone with a Robbins top?? Please help???? Thanks. Rob

Shrink Fit

You must have got a warranty from the manufacturer of the top, right? Is the installer/upholsterer an established/reputable company? In another words he has been in his present location conducting business for some length of time? What made you choose him as an installer?

I think that the tops do tend to shrink a little over time......but that they do not shrink a whole lot. If the top is loose and baggy still after a few days then it needs to go back and be readjusted. If he is a reputable business he should do this no problem, if not, then call the Better Business Bureau. You can do this anyway and see if other complaints have been lodged against him. Call anothe upholsterer or the manufacturer of the top and ask the same questions of them that you asked here.

Good luck,

Steve

i just put on an easy on top that i got from topsonline. the top i got fit great, i did the install myself, first time to , i have one small wrinkle on the side and and i believe that it will fix itself once it shrinks a little. i am by no means an expert, but having just installed mine myself, it is a little time consuming and you do need a little pataince,my opion is that it was probaly not the top ,but the installer.

Mine fit perfectly, maybe too tight. If they put uneven wrinkles, big emphasis on being uneven, in it then there is only one real solution, tell them to fix it right. Either that or you are pretty much handing them money to do a ****ty job and to ruin a good quality top (got mine from topsonline too). How much did you pay anyway? It's either you get screwed from a halfass job or they get it done right. When I saw mine after it was done my jaw dropped. It was tight, fit well, and was done without a single tiny wrinkle, in northern california, expensive as hell as most people put it, for $300. They had some seats they were doing, including some difficult recaros, and they all looked like they had excellent craftsmanship, so I chose that place.

What I paid for poor fitting top?

I was just asked what I paid for the very disappointing result on my 92 firebird vert new top? Well, the answer to this is I paid too much considering the result, but probably not enough in the first place. I would have gladly paid considerably more if I new I was risking a poor install. The frusteration is not woth the little difference in price, or the money I saved. Yeah, I only spent $600, plus tax, but if the installer does not get it right when I bring it back for adjustment, I will have to pay someone else to get it right. Lesson learned, make sure you go to someone you have complete confidence in, and that they are well established, with a good rep. Also, do not skimp out for the lower price, and risk the frustration I have to deal with.
